Count2ten
Kids want to start fishing for the bigger stuff and I need to pick them a couple of baitrunners up. I'd prefer to get some quick drags but it's stressful enough taking 2 boys fishing without wondering whether they have slackened off after every cast. Want to keep costs down as they need some other bits. I've probably got it down to the daiwa black widows and the shimano St or dl's. Absolute minefield of info on those reels on the Internet,, some say the shimanos are not as good as before and that the dls are worth the little bit extra and others say the st' s are just as good. Any info, opinions and any other recommendations would be welcome. Thanks in advance
bluelabel
Have a look at Okuma and Sonik... both have good reps and a bit cheaper than Shimano's and Daiwas... that said Second hand Shimano's off the bay of E is a way forward

Thanks in advance I have a distinct preference for Shimano reels, but I would definitely agree more modern Shimanos are not as good as older models, with a few exceptions. I used to work in a tackle shop, so played with plenty, my view is do not waste your money on the DL range, stick with the ST. welder

Carpbell_ll
I have always gone with the Shimano reels but i think the baitrunner style reel is just as good from most brands, i have the DL6000 and the ST6000 no difference in how they perform, Not one to jack a thread, but what's the difference in the size of baitrunners, 6000 to 10000 is it just a bigger spool or is the reel body bigger as well? smufter
I've had the Black Widows before, and as a "starter" bait runner they're hard to beat at the price. Others I'd consider would be something in the Okuma range.

The 10000 does have a bigger body, whereas on the smaller sizes I think it is just spool size. Carpbell_ll
