i usually use no less than 8 feet of drennan double strength 6lb with a 1 3/4 rod and get some vaseline on the hooklength to stop it sinking and dragging your bait around.

this is where i am different to a lot of people i prefere a shortes length of maybe 1 0r 2 foot unless using a zig rig when surface contorroling i think the fish has mor chance of hooking itself with shorter hairs,

i may be wong but thats what i prefere,

I hate to sound like middle of the road here, but I use 3-6 feet

The length is dependant on the wind strength, and it's direction, calculated against where I can effectively present the bait on the water due to vegetation and landscape.

I have split this thread.

The venue question is now in UK Where to Fish.

As for surface hooklinks I use an arms span. Really technical way I know, especially as I normally freeline. I just prefer that length no matter what hooklink I use.
