rybak Posted June 15, 2005 Report Posted June 15, 2005 Hi, I think I have a problem with my rig setup, because every time I go fishing, I get my line broken on a bite at least once. I have a baitrunner reel with the drag setup good. What happens is that I get a really strong bite, the fish is running with my bait, but when I go to set the hook the line goes limp and I loose my whole rig, including the weights. I use braided line, with a simple hair rig connected to the main line with a swivel and above that a sliding weight. Any tips? Thanks Paul Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted June 15, 2005 Report Posted June 15, 2005 sounds as if your knot not is breaking/undoing under pressure, check your knots as this is not good! Quote
rybak Posted June 15, 2005 Author Report Posted June 15, 2005 The thing is that there is not much pressure. The fish takes the bait, starts running by the time I go to set the hook, the line goes limp, and there goes my whole rig. At first I thought that it was a snapping turtle, but I still haven't seen one. This only happens to me when fishing for carp, I use the same knot and line for other fish, and haven't had any problems. Quote
eagle Posted June 15, 2005 Report Posted June 15, 2005 It really does sound as if it's your knot at fault What knot do you use for tying your main line to your hooklink If you are happy with your knot try sealing it with a dab of rig glue. You say it does not happen with other types of fishing but remember with carp you are fishing for a much larger species Try using a grinner knot Quote
carpmadsmurf Posted June 15, 2005 Report Posted June 15, 2005 What line are you using on the reel? What breaking strain and how old is it? Could be old line..... could be too light a breaking strain or could be dodgy knots. Quote
elmoputney Posted June 15, 2005 Report Posted June 15, 2005 i would suggest changing your line and your knots because this shouldnt happen i use a blood knot for tying a line to a swivel and its never let me down Quote
rybak Posted June 15, 2005 Author Report Posted June 15, 2005 Thanks for all your suggestions. The line I have is fairly new, it's braided, and its rated at 25lbs. I really don't think that its my knot because the break happens before my swivel, I know this because I put a small weight above my swivel to keep my sliding weight from getting too close to the bait, and when I get this weird break I lose everything, so I know that it breaks above my swivel. I know that this must sound very strange to you, but I've never had anything like this happen to me before either, I am now thinking that its either a predatory fish (pike/muskie) or a snapping turtle. But I will try getting a bigger diameter line, and see if this solves the problem. Paul Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted June 15, 2005 Report Posted June 15, 2005 Why do you put a small weight in front of the swivel? is this weight crimped to the braid? if so this could be your problem, try using a rubber bead instead Quote
rybak Posted June 15, 2005 Author Report Posted June 15, 2005 Hmm, I never thought of that, sorry but as you can see I'm new at this carp thing, and being in Canada where it's not that popular my resources are very limited. Quote
elmoputney Posted June 15, 2005 Report Posted June 15, 2005 i agree with adam the weight if its crimped on will be caiusing a weak spot in the braid and due to the lack of stretch in braid this might be why its breaking use a rubber bead or running rig kit and this should hopefully make this problem dissapear Quote
mvodkaman Posted June 25, 2005 Report Posted June 25, 2005 check the eyes on your rod rings as well a small chip or crack in the eyes will nick your braid when under tension causing it to part. Quote
salokcinnodrog Posted June 25, 2005 Report Posted June 25, 2005 Sounds like a knotty problem! With a braided line never use a Blood Knot. It strangulates the line and causes it to 'go'. I prefer the Uni Knot for braids when tying to the swivel. Quote
jakey Posted June 27, 2005 Report Posted June 27, 2005 A blood knot would break straight away if using braid. Alot of people still use them on mono with good results though. Quote
