petemid Posted October 13, 2007 Report Posted October 13, 2007 Hi, am looking at going to France next year for the first time. Have some Shimano 5000 gte b reels. Think these would be good enough for 8 - 12 acre lakes with fish approaching 40 pounds?? thanks Quote
oldfellah Posted October 13, 2007 Report Posted October 13, 2007 They should be just fine for lakes of that size. Unless you are going to fish one of the inland sea type waters just standard UK tackle is more than adequate. Quote
silly12sally Posted October 13, 2007 Report Posted October 13, 2007 Yeah they will be fine. Even normal baitrunners will be fine. 8-12 acres is only medium size in this country. Quote
davew Posted October 15, 2007 Report Posted October 15, 2007 Sorry to disagree, I think reels equivalent to the Shimano 10,000s or better are more suitable to play carp in the 40lb region. Obviously the smaller reels are also not much use for casting distances, only my opinion though! Quote
petemid Posted October 15, 2007 Author Report Posted October 15, 2007 Thanks for the replies. Thinking about hiring tackle but alot of places don't hire the reels. Have found a few places though so maybe thats the better bet. Quote
fishingswampie Posted October 15, 2007 Report Posted October 15, 2007 I have 8000 gtebs and have not been found wanting on the lakes i have fished in that region in terms of size. Quote
Guest fenboy Posted October 20, 2007 Report Posted October 20, 2007 I would save my money the reels you have will do just fine. Quote
dondoncarp Posted October 23, 2007 Report Posted October 23, 2007 Your reels are just fine...they`ll cast as far as most big pits if your technique is ok.......the only thing is it takes longer to reel in......but thats no problem as it hasn`t gotta be done very often Quote

theoriginalmonkeyboy Posted October 25, 2007 Report Posted October 25, 2007 one thing to find out is what range you need to get on the fish, if its a comfortable range then the reels you have and are familiar with are fine if you need to fish at big range or use a boat then you may want to think about a change but dont do it just for one trip do it if you are ready for a change or upgrade, saying that I have just returned from France and fished one @ 150 yards and two @ 30 yards!!!!.........its really a choice between need and treating yourself to shiny new un's mate Quote
