Cheap reel

Recommended Posts

I am looking for a cheap reel, preferably a bait runner, has anyone got any suggestions? When I say cheap I mean under £25 as it won't be used a lot just as a spare reel and I hope to upgrade my gear as I start to catch bigger fish, for now I can't imagine its going to work too hard!

Also while on the subject what is the difference between free spool and bait runner?

Thanks

Baitrunner is Shimano's registered name, it is a free spool system. A reel with a rear drag turned down to minimum and anti-reverse  on can become a free spool, Abu Cardinal style, or even Fighting Drag. Daiwa have Bite'n'Run, other makes have their own brand name.

Pricewise you have got me stumped, I would be going Shimano ST range, which are about £50.

Oh right, I guess going years ago with my brother in law who only has Shimano reels means I just got the name from that. I will have a loo at the ST one's and see if I can find a cheap used one. Cheers

I bought 3 of these on eBay for 80nicker to stick on my 1.75s for small waters. The st 6000 baitrunner. Do the job perfectly and much better than the similarly priced fox eos ones I had.

In summary, to get a sufficient real for 25 nicker your going to have to nick a bargain on eBay. There is bargains to be had mate. Though I've noticed they are few and far between this time of year. Winter is best to get cheap fishing bits on auction sites. Gumtree is always worth a look too, don't be scared to bid what seems low either. It opens a dialect at least, but sometimes people are happy just to take a quick few quid on something unused.

Just having a quick glance I can see st 10000s going for around 30

I am always trying to nick a bargain on eBay so am happy to keep an eye out. If I need to wait then I will wait, its the main game in fishing anyway!

Thanks

If you only want to spend around £25.00 or so, have a look at Okuma reels on ebay. Very well made reels, and will last you a while. I have 3 that I bought about 15 years or so ago and they are still working fine.

I have been looking at Okuma actually so glad you said this! I'd never heard of them before but they do look alright.

Thanks

if your not bothered about being a tackle tart then these are worth looking at, i got a set of 3 for £30 10+ years ago and they are still doing the job, one is getting a bit noisy now so one day i will have to upgrade to something more expensive like Bassia's

Thanks for the link that looks alright and if you have got 10 years out of them it can't be bad. At the price even a couple of years would be brilliant.

Have a look at the stillwater range, Chapmans Angling sell them, I had a set of their version of 6010 baitrunner and for thirty quid i could not fault them they seen a lot of action on a local runs water and other than chipped paint they still work fine.

They seem to of discontinued the ones i got and are now doing a big pit baitrunner for thirty five quid, worth a look.
