Uroy
What's the optimal length of a hair on a kd . By the hair I mean the distance from the hook to the start of the pop up . Not the entire length as obviously small pop ups and big pop ups alter this . I've just started tying kds and trying to find what works best cheers
Uroy
What's the best type / pattern of hook for a kd rig ? Ive been playing about tying them with Nash fang x twisters but any diagrams I've seen online use a more curved hook does it matter ? Thanks 😀
harpz_31
Absolutely awesome rig Always use a curve shank hook in any brand you've got faith in I personally use korda hooks and nash bullit braid
harpz_31
Ive never used the kd rig as a pop up rig, I always used it critically balanced with fake corn but had the hair finishing at the bend of the hook which is usually 10mm to the bottom of the bait to the hook My all time favourite rig and wouldn't use anything else for fishing over particles Uroy and carpmachine
salokcinnodrog
The KD rig, (capitalised as its re-inventor was Kenny Dorsett) was originally used with a shot on the hair and a pop-up on the hair to keep it low to the lakebed, critically balanced. It works best with a short shank curved hook, Gardner Mugga style. Personally, and it is not a Korda dig, I found that Korda Kurvs simply were not sharp enough and did not hold their point for that long in water. Look at your hook holds, where is the hook ending up in the carps mouth? Middle of bottom lip perfect hair length, deep in mouth too long, edge of lips or losing fish, hair too short. I'm going to merge the two KD rig threads as this post answers both commonly and B.C.
commonly
Love the KD style, I tie the hook this way on a combi rig as I think it gives an aggressive hook angle without the need for tubing. I use Korda Krank 4-8 dependant on pop up size. I agree with the above comment, but now always sharpen any hook I use. my preferred length of hair is between 10 & 20mm from hook dependant on bait size, I feel a bit of distance makes it harder for the fish to spit the hook once it realises the bait is on a rig. ms1970
I've been using this rig on the last few sessions snowman style on a 15lb monifilament hook link with about a 15mm gap from hook great rig and brilliant hook holds commonly
