Bait runners vs Big pit

Recommended Posts

Good morning All. Thinking of upgrading some reels currently have a couple of shimano 6000 St baitrunners.was looking at big pit reels give me a bit more options on bigger waters. Been using bait runners for two years and a good simple reel to use only been back fishing for two years, any advice I know it's down to personnel preference in the end

Why not get Big pit baitrunners and solve your issues?. Big casting, thick line will need bigger spools.

Easy option right there.

I've been using big pits for years now and wouldn't dream of going back now to be honest.

A friend upgraded from shimmy baitrunners to some big pits and he commented how easy casting is now for him. With QD now on a lot of big pits the baitrunners is obsolete I think.

I have recently changed from shimano dl10000 rb's to :-

1st shimano ultegra14,000xtds (now on 12ft rods)

2nd shimano ultegra 5500 xtd's (on 10ft scope rods)

casting is far better, smoother, and just feel rite....as you say it's each to their own but I wouldn't go back to baitbrunners, I'm most definitely a big pit/ baby big pit convert 😁

I switched from shimano gte baitrunners  to daiwa entoh big pits and so glad I did and wouldn't go back

Was abit worried about not having a baitrunner feature but front drag is loads better imho

Quick drag is standard on some pit reels but wasn't on my entoh's but found you don't really need it

What reels you looking at getting ?

I went from big pits (Daiwa 5&6000t,Shimano Ultegras,Penn back to latest baitrunner. I don't like baitrunner spools, quick drag was easy but I like the baitrunner lever and the drag stays exactly the same.

I've got some wychwood riots on my spod and marker rods and they seem fine but never really used them on my main rods

Yeah I have two riots on marker and Spods, but again not on mains always had shimano baitrunners. Just finding my way through the carp world previously a match boy . Then marriage and kids curtailed that so two years ago took up carp fishing , although bank time limited at mo

QD just means less turns of the spool cap from loose to locked up. It's not really necessary as you can just use a standard spool and do the same but marketing will have you think otherwise. Both my Tournament model reels had standard drag and it made zero difference.

Baitrunners are separate drags that allow freespool, like as used in sea fishing multipliers. As the fish roars off with the bait you put the reel into normal mode by turning the handle or flicking the lever and away you go. Have a play in the shop to get the feel of things.

I've been using the Wychwood QD5500's on my Dwarfs, (nice reels) but I have to say that I prefer the Shimmy Baitrunners... I have some XTE1000 that I loved using, but changed because they didn't fit the reel pouches that I had (yup I'm that much of a tackle tart)

I'm thinking of swapping them back again... the only thing I'd miss on the Wychwoods is the cranking power of the bigger handles...!

I still have my Riot 65's that I took to Les Quis many years back and I found them to be superb reels with excellent line lay and they cast like a rocket

What's a dedicated tart to do....????

Two birds with one stone? Take a look at the Shimano Big Baitrunner Longcasts. Perfect linelay, fast retrieve ratio, full baitrunner facility, backwind facility and will cast to the next county if you have the technique.

Mine represent the best money I've invested into my fishing in years.
