  1. Is anybody fishing this place at the moment? Ive just moved over here and that lake is very local, i can still fish my other lakes as i havnt moved far but as this is on my door step it could be handy for a few sessions on there.

    A few questions i have is;

Is it owned by a club or is it a day ticket water? i read things about a club and then you can still fish it on a day ticket?

Are there any nice carp in there, ive read about a 30 but also read that isnt there no more, not sure if it died or got free in a flood or something?

Ive also read alot about thefts and what not, but this is from imformation 2 or 3 years ago, has it changed and became safer since?

And what are the local anglers like? I have read in some places that they don't like it when other people catch a carp.

Any information would be appreciated (obviously not looking for what bait where to fish etc, just if its worth havig a dabble in there)

    Thanks again, Ross.

  2. Much like Nick said, pop-ups are best used away from tight beds of bait. I think you should think about how you're fishing before using pop-ups just for the sake of it. If you're fishing a tight bed of particles I would suggest sticking to your bottom baits. I use a pop-up if I am fishing a spread of bait, usually on a choddy.

Relating to the original question, it may be worth looking at Gaz Fareham's version of the 360 rig, I have been using this for 12 months or so and can't recommend it enough. The key thing with this rig is to keep the combi section as short as possible, you don't want the bait fully popped-up, you want the bait to act like a wafter.

My style of fishing revolves around a spread of boilies, just normaly put my rig in a PVA bag for anti tangle purposes. Then throw boilies out with a stick. But on silty lakes I fish I do struggle with bottom baits

  3. Cheers lads, looks like ive got abit of mixed opinions, after reading through the posts you supplied, your opinions and the internet, i think im going to have a go with the hinged stiff rig (as far as my pop ups are concerned) I don't think ive got much to lose other than not catching, although i will be trying it on one rod and my bottom bait on the other rod. And if the fish can get caught often enough then try different pop up rigs/presentations on each rod.

    Ross.

  4. For pop up rigs I use hinge stiff rigs for anti tangle properties. I fish them on a helicopter set up with 6 to 10 inches of movement with the backstop bead. Mainly fished over light silt bottoms.

If I'm fishing over harder bottoms I use the multi rig with a clip set up as you can get the pop up section quite short if needed and can create a great hinge effect with coated braid (Jel-e-wire is my preferred hookink for this)

If your not having much luck with pop ups or bottom baits then try a wafter, these sort the fish out. They don't see them that often as most companies don't make them and those that do make them very few make them right. But get the right ones and you have a unique hook bait which is fished in it's simplest form.

To fish it helicopter style with a back bead would I have to use a leader? As I don't no how you would use a back bead on straight mono?

If I'm not mistaken you make your own wafters? And own a bait company? An it I remember rightly you supplied courtz and his mate some wafters for sandhurst and they bagged up on there last 24 hours there?

  5. Cheers guys, whenever i have tried fishing with pop ups before its litteraly being, 6 inch's of coated braid, 1 inch stripped back from the hair then with a lump of putty where the braid joins the stripped back part so an inch is popped up...Just never had any sucess on it that way and was wondering if the presentation was wrong. Il try and persist with it that way throughout this year and see if i can get it working and i was just fishing it at the wrong time, or not on the right spot etc.

  6. Hey guys,

I am hoping somebody can point me in the right direction here please?

This year im going to try and fish pop up baits a bit more often, after failing on some lakes with bottom baits as i couldnt get a decent presentation on certain lakes i feel pop ups would be the way to go.

But im not sure which rig would be best to do this.

I don't fish with leaders or leadcore so i guess that throws the chod out of the window.

So i have narrowed it down to either the combi rig or the hinged stiff rig.

But the only difference i can see between these 2 rigs is the actualy hooklink material. Both seem to start off with a flurocarbon from the swivel, then (from what i can read on the net) the combi rig goes to a short length of braid, and the hinged stiff rig has the flurocarbon going to the hook.

For a start, am i heading in the right direction of a decent pop up rig? and if so which one would be the better one to choose and play around with?

Any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance.

    Ross :)

  7. chod with a popup? brightly coloured? Im debating weather or not to use cell on the lake either the fish see it as a food source or its been completely over thrown in??

Can you even fish a chod without using a pop up?

Nash, i just read you had a 48 hour match on Barston, ive fished there a few times, how did you get on mate?

  8. You fish exactly how i fish, that rig is exactly like mine, same length, and it works very well, although i use an ESP curve shank hook. Maybe, (just maybe) the fish arnt feeding well enough on your spot because of not enough bait to get them feeding as much, and thereefore, taking their time feeding, and not geting the hook in their mouth.

I used to fish a lake with that rig (minus the shrink tubing then) and fish halibut pellets, fished with a little stick like you or a couple of pellets in a pva stick. And lost nearly every fish i hooked.

I then tried something a little different, i put the rig in a solid PVA bag, medium or large size to get more bait out on the right spot. Since then, never lost a fish that i hooked with pellet.

Not long after, i started getting pickups again and then lose a couple or get done. So then i added the shrink tube over the eye of the hook. Now i very rarely get short burst runs and get done, and havn't lost a fish since ive done it.

Basicaly, all im saying, put your rig in a solid PVA bag and see what happens?

    Goodluck, Ross.

  9. Not quite, the winning pair had 2400lb a new 48hr record. The total for all of the teams was over 9000lb , what ever way you look at it quite amazing

 Didn't realise the total weight was 9000lb. Thought that was excessive even for drayton. But still that is a lot of fish caught in a short period of time, and impressive angling.

Thanks for the correction. Better tell some people I got my facts wrong :)

  10. is the fishing anygood at drayton at the moment

Korda had a match on there for team england 2 weekends ago.

Pairs match. In 48 hours, the winning pair caught over 9000lb worth of carp.

    Think its fishing well.

Also read the first 30 was caught last week, at 30lb 8oz.

    Ross.

  11. I started carp fishing last year, so il tell you from my experiences what is best.

Use a knotless knot setup with a running lead. That's it, from that you can only improve a rig when YOU know and understand why you need too. Maybe the rig isn't hooking property, so you will tweak the rig to suit the hooking properties. As for leaders, in my opinion, don't use one, I don't use one, and have great success using mono straight through. As you get back into it you will understand your components much more and what you need in what situation.

    Hope it helps. Ross.

  12. Ross, if you're at all like me you'll be leaving a couple of hours after arriving, cursing the damn fool owner and his greed for money at the cost of disfiguring hundreds of what were once some of Mother Nature's finest.

Mick has for some time been aware of my feelings about this situation, hence the wink at the end of his post. He knew I'd pull no punches.

    Ian

You are probably right there Ian and if it wasnt for the great breakfast we are having before hand tommorow i wouldnt bother going.

I know how you and Mick bounce around off each other and knew something was coming hence his wink.

But i thought you was going to say you love the place or something along them lines. Just glad i wasnt missing the point and what i seen is exaclty what it was.

guessing there isnt any 18lb carp in there then?

The lad who collects your money claimed that he'd had a 23lb common but he's the owners son and is maybe 11.

    Ian

Ha! i'l believe that when i see it.

    Ross.

  14. Yes, I'm here. The place is a disgrace to be blunt, and the fish resemble parrots. Dreadful mouth damage is entirely commonplace, they have no lips.

I've fished there once and shall never, ever do so again. Stock levels are ridiculously high, to the point that competition for food is necessary just for the fish to survive, so they'll just take whatever you put in front of them. A pork pie would probably do.

When I left there I felt dirty and my conscience would NOT allow me back there unless it's to find the owner and give him the kicking he richly deserves.

Now it's time to see if YOUR conscience will allow you to further damage the poor creatures.

    Ian

    Cheers for being completly honest

I had a feeling the state of the fish would be poor.

Landing stages where a mess and its just a tip! a right mess. Me and my dad where very dissapointed with the looks of it and really not looking forward to tommorow.

God knows how long ago the pictures for the internet where taken but it clearly isnt recent.

    Cheers Ian.

    Ross.

  15. Hey guys.

Just a quicky, i know this is a match pool but was wondering if anyone has ever fished here? (its in balsall common by/on the pig farm) I have a work match coming up tommorow just a for a social really and a little competition. So i had a walk round with my dad today and we was really un impressed with the lake.

Just looked really run down and not well looked after. Just wondering what the fishing on it is like?

Any experiences with the lake would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks, Ross.

  16. how much to fish at barston lakes please and what are the best pegs would i be right in saying between 60 -80

Think it's 15 quid a night but google it and it will tell you, also have to buy a night permit which covers you for a year which is only a tenna.

I fished peg 91 and had 18 carp out. But most pegs fish well there I guess.
