Nobski
Just wondering if anyone has ever compared the strength of a barbed hook against the same brand and type of barbless hook? Also can crimping the barb weaken a barbed hook? Dont want to mention any makes but I have had a hook snap just below the barb on a crimped hook, guessing I have used too much force and damaged the hook when crimping the barb. cheers
salokcinnodrog
You might actually find that a barbless hook is stronger than a barbed. The barb was often formed by a cut just below the point and creating the barb with the sliver, although that may have changed.
yonny
They still do it like that as far as I'm aware Nick so it stands to reason a barbless hook would be stronger in that area. That said, when a fish is hooked correctly the load is applied around the bend of the hook rather than the hook point, so it shouldn't make a difference. I suspect for the hookpoint to snap off the fish would have to be hooked very poorly i.e. just nicked on the point. salokcinnodrog
fangus15
You could file the barb down use a dremel tool . What size hooks snapped may go bigger or change the make.
