christoph22 Posted November 30, 2010 Report Posted November 30, 2010 Me and a friend fished a lake that was something like 12ft on average last year and it proved difficult to fish. The scorching july temperatures had a part to play but did the depth as well? we are only used to fishing places with a max depth of around 10-12 feet in places averaging 8 feet The lake we want to fish is lac de passion and averages 12feet. Will this make the fishing harder or is this just a common occurance in French lakes? Cheers Quote
cobleyn Posted November 30, 2010 Report Posted November 30, 2010 Carp adapt their feeding habits dependnat on the ir environment- not the country. Lots of fish at caught at casien between 30 and 45ft. On the st. lawrence a simliar occurence happens (30-40ft)- although I know a diver who's been in the main boat channel and seen v.v. large carp at 60ft plus (but not feeding). Quote
Guest keenook Posted November 30, 2010 Report Posted November 30, 2010 Good points Cob! And 12' is not deep water..... Quote
carpquarry Posted November 30, 2010 Report Posted November 30, 2010 The depth of a lake will not make alot of differance to whether you catch fish, I have a very deep lake and there is no problem catching at 25/30ft the only differance it will make is that a deeper water will fish well later in the year but take a bit longer to get going in the spring. What you need to look at is what type of lake it is a runs water lots of smaller fish or a specimen lake with large fish but fewer of them. Stock levels will give you an idea but you have to take into account depth and not just surface area, We have appox 200 fish in 3 acres but with depths of 50ft and ave 35ft it has just as much water in as most 15 acre lakes and it is by no means a runs water. moorsey Posted December 1, 2010 Report Posted December 1, 2010 My only comment would be that the shallow lake will mean that any fish passing over your bait will be closer to that bait than it may be on a deep lake. On top of that, if the fish are in the upper layers of a deep lake then a zig may be necessary in order to put a bait in amongst them whereas, in shallow water even the upper layers will be that much closer to the baited patch. You make a good point. The lake we are thinkin of fishing has 250 fish in 5 acres or 7 acres (says 5 and 7 on two different pages on the site so not sure which it is). Would you say this was more of a runs water? Quote
carpquarry Posted December 2, 2010 Report Posted December 2, 2010 Well Chris I dont know what lake you are talking about and I am no expert on runs waters and I may get shoot down for saying this, but at best the lake you are talking about has 50 fish per acre if it is only 5 acres, I would think it is somewhere in the middle. I would think for a proper pucka runs water you would want 100 fish per acre. The best person to ask is Kim on here she runs a good runs water called Rushes and she may be able to give you more of an idea on what stock levels per acre you should have. Quote

K matey not really looking for a runs water anyway somewhere in the middle is exactly what were looking for The fishery is lac de passion, heres a link to their website which is suprisingly easy to use compared to alot of other french fishery websites I've had a look at. I've logged on to some n thought right Im not going here simply becos the web page is set out in a mess and a cant be bothered to look for the information I need as it could be anywhere! lol Quote
mrs_rusheslake Posted December 4, 2010 Report Posted December 4, 2010 My advice, in general, about your proposed trip to France next year. Dont pick a venue on the look or feel of a website after all Luke would never win any prizes for the Graviers website would he?? I couldnt find any catch reports for your proposed lake, so to be honest with you I would email them and ask for them... they will, as with any other lake owner worth their salt, be only too happy to provide them. Even be more cheeky and ask them to put you in touch with a couple of their regulars who will be able to give you a full run down on tactics, baiting etc. We have a Facebook page where we do exactly that and put all our anglers in touch with each other and are, as such, fully visible to everyone.
