We had to buy the bait runner conversion kits for the older reels, I was using rear drag and bait runner reels before I moved into carp fishing, so it just stuck with me My fishing buddy like pram hood bibles, I like brollies, both do the same job, I think we just all have our own way

Nobody is letting anything run, it's no different than setting a front drag to do the same job as a bait runner, I just prefer a bait runner,

Fox could at least incorporate a couple of pegging points in those mats for the money you pay. I can imagine those hoods catching the wind and blowing off somewhere lol

I just find its what ever you've grown with, you do get line twist, thankfully I don't catch that many fish for it to be a problem lol

You have to bare in mind, some of the older anglers havent always had QD front drag systems on their reels, we had to wind up the front drag which on a couple of occasions I lost fish, I've had loads of bait runners over the years and always found I fished better, diawa regal, diawa emblem, shimano LC, shimano 10000, and now mitchell Avorunners. I have tried others, emblem s, wychwood riot and tfg ones, I just dont get on with front drag systems.

Bait runners are brilliant, not just for fishing but for a few applications, some people get on with front drag systems some people get on with rear systems. I use mine quite a lot, when markering it's quite handy just to clip open the baitrunner and pace out line, I presume it's just as easy with a front drag, I like em, doesn't make me lazy, some people like BMW's some like AUDI's, I've always found faffing around with a front drag a pain, a simple half wind of the handle and your into your fish.

I'd gotten these rods as I'd seen some footage of the guys casting just over 200 yards on these rods, 13ft 3lbtc I think, so the only thing that's at fault is me, and I can work on that

I thought the same, but on the gear I have I could fish for weeks, I'd just need more food and bait.

I purchased a pair of Shimano Velocity Rods especially for this pit, I did measure a cast a few weeks ago before I really started casting and that was 25 wraps. I purposefully use a 20mm bait because I can clearly see if it's tangled or not, I've shortened my rigs by a couple of inches, because I think longer rigs just cause to much drag. If I needed any further I'd have to start using dumbells. I worked really hard at getting my casting up to scratch, I would say now 100 yards is a comfortable range for me, whereas before, I could get just beyond but it was a struggle. I was amazed the difference the rods made to be honest, especially when you really lean into it. It's funny because, you know when you've done a good cast, everything just feels right, I liken it to a peachy shot at the driving range. The sound of the rod is just different, softer rods you get that whipping high pitched sound, the velocity's just sound deeper and a bit more solid, if you know what I mean.

I had a strong wind coming in from left to right, and I actually used it a bit to carry the spomb that bit further. Tough going, but the casting is getting easier and easier, I quite like the challenge of it all. I think it's a difficult water, theres not many carp that come out during the year let alone the original stock, but I think that's my next target, one of the original fish. I don't care how long it takes I just love being on that water,

I couldn't get any of the line you recommended in time, but I did go down to 12lb in my line, I'm now getting all the way across, so that was another bonus from yesterday. I do need a pair of chest waders, I'm sick of getting the twins wet, and it's getting colder now lolSo hopefully waders next week, I've settled in quite nicely now, so full steam ahead as far as I'm concerned

Hopefully this time next week, I need to tweak a couple of things now autumn is here, nothing major, one thing I will say, dnot expect a lot of captures, this pit is quite a hard place to fish, but I would like to share and bits and pieces along the way with you lot on here.

As soon as we decided to pack up, the heavens opened, we got wet through, still cant wait to get back for more punishment though

No fish to report as of yet, I tipping it down but I'm tucked up under the brolly, I hope this rain eases, I've got to start packing up in just over an hour to be off by 7am, always next time lads
