I agree with what you say that education is better than condemnation but how much education do people need.Nearly every magazine,dvd,forum,tackle shop or whatever else the angler's source of info shows how to set it up,even the package the leadcore/lead clips come in shows you how to use the items safely.Yet people still don't so there is no other option......

I think this sounds like it's down to the misuse of lead clips seeing as 99% of the leads were still attached.I've seen people glue them on before because they're worried about losing a £1.50 lead sat behind £3000 worth of rods,reels and alarms. We don't need their sort in the sport and you can't educate pork... I don't blame Mid Kent in the slightest and I have a lot of respect for Chris Logsdon

I agree about the pop up issue with regards to larger carp as I always believed due to their size they can't get close enough to the lakebed to distinguish between the two.A critically balanced pop up will be the first to shoot up into the fish's mouth. Nick, Neil I agree about the carp not really being able to distinguish between pop ups and bottom baits most of the time more so over a choddy or weedy bottom and also Nick is spot on about using a simple rig. However Im not always certain about the critical balancing of baits having seen carp causing that much disturbance when feeding over a baited patch that the bait (pop up) was flying all over the place in the vortexes caused by the carp. In this case I just used a over shotted pop up which nailed them really well. I know a lot of anglers use and recommend critically balancing baits but for me its not the be all and end all. Very true Jez,it's not the be all and end all but from my observations,all be them in the margins I've seen carp tentatively pick up boilies one by one over a baited patch as if they're "looking" for something.Whether they are or not who knows but seeing as I'm predominantely a boilie angler when I target bigger fish then on my findings I feel more confident fishing a critically balanced bait when they seem to be picking up individual baits rather than gorging themselves.

It's just a confidence thing for me really.I use Sufix Stealth Skin/Black Silt,Hydrolink in grey,Silkworm and ESP Ghost fluoro.These cover any situation or lakebed I'm likely to encounter and I like my hooklink to blend in as much as possible. I know what you're are saying and those that read the mags month in month out are no doubt those with 20 different hooklength materials and 30 patterns of hooks.

Plenty of high 20s and several 30s coming out.Bristol Bait Supplies CS1 boilies have been taking the place apart from what I hear but don't ignore surface tactics.

In my opinion I think you may be,if the silt is what is deemed as "clean" silt not the horrible black stuff.What you have to remember is that one of the carp's food source,bloodworm burrows into the silt so the carp aren't at all phased by actively feeding in silt so why be concerned if your bait is in their too.

It doesn't sit well at all for such a company with Korda's stature to continually have serious QA problems with their gear.Lead clips,hooks,hooklengths and PVA have all failed anglers but still they continue to turn out substandard gear. Don't hear problems to that extent about ESP,Kryston,Rig Marole etc or even smaller end tackle producers.......personally I wouldn't touch any of their gear Except ESP hooks Now I'd like to see Kryston making a hook, have 100% confidence in all their stuff Not saying those companies haven't had issues but Korda seem to have a problem with nearly everything they release.

I hate to agree but I find a 2 or 3 turn blood knot with the end blobbed after exposure to a lighter more than adequate for Subterfuge on the chods.

I use Amnesia for boom section of hinged stiffies but for chods I prefer to use Gardner's Trip Wire which is more or less identical to ESP Bristle.

Personally don't fancy using fluoro one of whose main characteristics is it's sinking properties when fishing a zig rig as opposed to Drennan Sub Surface Fly Leader which is designed to float.Work it out......

Uni knot or palomar.

Unless you're fishing a really weedy water where you need to jetison the lead to be in direct contact with the fish,is there any real need for you to use lead clips.I know everyman and his dog uses them in the magazines but fishing in open water you'd be better off fishing a running lead which is far more sensitive if it is fished with a slack line.The clips are only meant to "lose" the lead on becoming snagged in thick weed or lily pads not in open water so I suggest you're using them wrong. May I suggest testing your rig before putting it into the water to see how much pressure is required to release the lead.This should be standard practise IMO and something I always do no matter what set up I'm using.
