Reels; metal or plastic line clips
pablo7uk replied to pablo7uk's topic in Carp Fishing Tackle and Equipment
Could anyone recommend one over the other? The diawa are so much more expensive but I seem drawn to them for some reason. -
I use 2.5oz at the moment. My rods are 2.75lb and I find this to be heavy enough for use on these rods especially if I'm ever fishing solid bags too. Anything heavier seems cumbersome to cast. I once read something about ideal casting weights for a rods TC and that's why I settled on this weight. Add to this it's heavy enough to be roughly in the range of what most people use on lead clips and that was enough evidence for me to feel confident using them.

Reels; metal or plastic line clips

Interesting to know, I've got a couple in mind now thinking diawa emblem or Shimano 10000 xtb. I think my major influences are now going to be more on recommendation and price rather than clip style etc as I've quickly learnt that it doesnt matter haha -
Reels; metal or plastic line clips
pablo7uk replied to pablo7uk's topic in Carp Fishing Tackle and Equipment
I agree I was surprised at how short of a distance I could still mark out and clip up and cast without exerting too much pressure on the clipped line. I think I went to as little as 3 wraps on one rod just for the sake of practice haha. -
Reels; metal or plastic line clips

Thanks for all the advice, I fished Clearwater Fishery in carnforth during the week and although I don't have all the spomb and marker gear yet I did brave using the line clips and measuring wraps on distance sticks for the first time ever. Needless to say I will never look back, it's so easy and reliable and hitting the clip on a cast is so much less risky than I ever believed it would be!! -
Reels; metal or plastic line clips
pablo7uk replied to pablo7uk's topic in Carp Fishing Tackle and Equipment
I agree to buy cheap buy twice especially with tackle that should last for years. My main concern was if a metal line clip was actually better although it doesn't seem limited to the expensive reels so that would suggest not. This may sound daft but is there actually a specific way the line should be clipped? Eg wrap it twice round etc etc -
Reels; metal or plastic line clips

To be honest I'm just not experienced at using the clip and it's something I definitely need to start doing in my fishing but I'm just trying to think ahead so I can buy the right gear to be honest. The diawa emblems do look good, they are much more expensive than any reel I've ever bought in my life though haha -
Hello, I'm looking to get a spod reel and a marker reel. The simple question is should I look for a metal line clip or plastic? I've seen dedicated spod reels that have plastic line clips for example the diawa emblem but are they really tough enough? I've always hesitated using my current reels for clipping up as they are plastic. Thanks Paul

Jrc hangers - the worst ever?
pablo7uk replied to pablo7uk's topic in Carp Fishing Tackle and Equipment
Probably a trend haha if it's used in all the fishing dvds etc people will naturally want it. Probably exactly why I've considered them too haha -
Thank god I'm not the only one haha. Thankfully a few of the waters I wanna fish this year seem to be very reasonable and well run but I checked out a few new potentials last night and couldn't believe what I was reading! Safe to say I won't bother with those places!

Just an afterthought... No pellets or fishery own pellets only No particles or fishery own particles only I appreciate particles can be prepared incorrectly and pellets have a huge varience in oil levels but I feel both these things can be used as a money making opportunity, as fishing and buying bait doesn't cost us enough anyway.

I feel I'm at risk of being slated for posting this but I'm really interested to see if others have the same views as me. Now before anyone gets the wrong impression of me I totally always respect all fishery rules, I just sometimes question the logic of the rules some fisheries choose. Examples; Limit of 1 pint of maggots per session, winter season only (this was on an 8 acre lake) No zig rigs No shelf life boilies No pellets (but yet the fishery will grow their own fish on pellets only and feed them into the lake in winter) I just can't really understand why these things would be banned. This isn't an infinite list by the way...what ridiculous rules have you come across in your area? Personally I just want to enjoy my fishing, respect the venue, wildlife and fish but at least have the simple freedom of bait choice and rig choice.

Jrc hangers - the worst ever?
pablo7uk replied to pablo7uk's topic in Carp Fishing Tackle and Equipment
I've got a couple of old fox hangers which I've resorted to using again recently but the sliding weight is quite loose on one of them and is prone to sliding to the heaviest setting on its own which makes it drop off the line haha. -
Awesome thanks, I've got some Ronnie rigs already tied up on short braid hooklinks for in bags so I'm sure that'll work fine for pop ups and wafters. Just gotta get out on the bank again now!
-
Like the look of this! Would you consider using this as a bag rig as well as chod/helicopter style? Personally I've always found 2.5oz to be a good size but then again I haven't fished with size 4 hooks for long and haven't really fished many big fish venues yet. Only time will tell I guess.
-
So in your opinion if I am using a size 4 krank is a 2.5oz lead really enough? I've opted for this lead size as I use 2.75tc rods and find it a nice weight for casting also gives me room to play with if I want to use a solid bag so that I'm not casting something overweight for the rod
-
With a run ring rig setup wouldn't you lose the self hooking properties associated with a lead clip setup? Or does the end rig still serve its purpose in that respect?
-
Can't go wrong with a combi line aligner! I definitely need to start using more bottom bait rigs again so I'm glad I tied up some blow back rigs recently.
-
What hook size out of interest? On a separate note...I haven't used a running rig for years haha but I'll have to later this year as I'm planning on fishing a venue with catfish!!
-
Genuinely guys appreciate you all commenting and giving advice. I will definitely persevere as they are clearly a popular pattern and a lot of you have strong faith in them. Hopefully I'll be able to report back in a few weeks with some decent catches! I'll persevere with the Ronnie rig and blowback rigs.
-
I've already got a file so I'll just keep a closer eye on sharpness from now on I think. It's easy to think that every hook is perfect straight out of the packet
-
Great thanks for the feedback, I must admit I used to add hemp to my old mix too and stopped that to make it cheaper. Seems like I've cut out all the good stuff and kept the filler! Think I'll start getting the vitalin again as it's not particularly expensive anyway!
-
Haha you all had to throw a spanner in the works! One minute I'm thinking stop overthinking and just persevere and now I'm thinking korda hooks are no good! Haha
-
Yeah I agree your right, I feel like I've tried to do so much learning and changing during lockdown ready to move onto bigger waters with bigger fish but then the sessions I've fit in since we've been allowed back on the bank just haven't gone well at all. I think based on the feedback I will persevere and move onto the new venues and see what happens

Hi all, This year I decided to give molasses a go. I've used a mixed bird seed blend before but with vitalin and this seemed to be very effective at pulling the fish in especially noticeable when fishing shallow margin spots seeing fish swirling their tails etc but since going for bird seed alone with molasses I feel the results just haven't been coming. Is vitalin really that attractive and the bird seed so unattractive? I used quite a lot of molasses but since it's natural I was under the impression you couldn't really over do it? Thoughts? Thanks
