Do a few trips during the spring. If you don't see any anglers, or any signs, just fish it. What's the worst that can happen? I suppose you could get shot but that's not very likely in this day and age.
I think the running set has the advantage of being able to be picked up from any direction. ... where the semi fixed lead can give it self away & be spat out if the fish is moving away from the lead & the hook length is straight.
I like the running lead setup on some waters , but wouldn't dream of using it up Horseshoe where it can be very weedy . The last thing you need is the lead staying in one place as the fish moves off getting all weeded up & creating a second pivot point .
I've caught some good fish on running leads so the hooking potential is very good but I personally don't use light leads in conjunction with it 2 3/4 oz minimum as you want the lead to stay still on the pick up .
Will this be when your river fishing? Much of a current?
