Having recently being in riba roja I was asked if I could put this letter on forum by some concerned ex pats living in the area.

Misguided Guiders

It has recently come to the attention of some of us ex-pats living in the Riba Roja de Ebre region, that there are others of us – calling themselves Carp & Catfish Guiders who are informing their British Clients that is now permissible to catch carp over 30cm ABOVE THE DAM at Riba Roja for the purposes of live baiting to catch catfish.

This is quite categorically NOT THE CASE and this practice must be stopped with IMMEDIATE EFFECT !!

If these so called guiders are allowed to continue with this murderous act they will destroy the tourist industry for fishing carp in this beautiful region, an industry which is already under threat having been exacerbated by our German, French & Eastern European friends over the past few years.

Should these Misguided Guiders be in any doubt about the above they would be wise to consult the following legislation issued by the Catalunyan authorities.

River fishing ( summary of newness)

Fishing at the River Ebre ( Catalunya) -2006

According to Resolucio MAH/520/2006

An except of which is :- Common Barbel, Mountain Barbel, Carp, Chub, Madrilla & Eel have to be returned to the river alive.

All kinds of exotic fish & crab have to be sacrificed immediately, except Rainbow Trout, Salvel-li, Carp & Black Bass.

Steve

Hi Slinter,Having recently returned fron Riba Roja fishing with alocal guy that lives ther I can tell you that small carp are probably the best bait for catfish that is why these misguided guides use them. This way they can tell their client they are better guides than others. If they fished legally they would not do as well and earn less. I would also guess they are perating illegally as well. All live and dead baits are banned in Catalunya no matter what anybody tell you. But be assured the local police (agents rural) know who they are and are building a case against them.

Hi ebroslayer

I see the name is very appropriate!!!

If you was to read my article regarding MISGUIDED GUIDES which I had been asked to put on this forum by a resident of riba.

If you and the other british guides operating in the riba & flix area where to read the rules you would find it is illegal to use any live baits for catfish but there again you probably would not be able to catch so many cats.

Lets hope this practice will stop soon.:evil:

Hi splinters,You should'nt believe all you hear about the ebro mate, most guides never use carp or lives for that matter, other methods far outfish lives anyway, its the anglers that catch and kill for food you should be worried about[immigrants] cause they dont care what size the carp is as a 40lb common will feed their family for weeks!!!

i dont use live bait for cats so it sounds like you have been misinformed by someone and having fished for carp passionately for 25yrs would not dream of putting a hook in one to cast out,i like taking hooks out of them!!!!!

hope this clears this up for you as i live in Riba Roja and know what goes on,some people will use lives but will generally use eels as bait as they last forever and obviously move and vibrate more in the river.

I certainly would not worry too much about the stock in the ebro, there is enough carp to go round, unless of course you are after catching the pasties mate

Hi ebroslayer I am very sorry if I got it wrong about you using live bait for cats :oops: But your advert for ebro adventure must have it wrong as well because it reads live/deadbaits from boat

I know the eastern europeans are a problem I have witnessed it on the ebro at riba I do visit every winter for at least a month I have also been standing talking to one of the guides named C--L while he was catching his livebait (in march 2007)

It is also illegal to take ells from the ebro and I have witnessed the german anglers smoking them.So what I am saying is not just hearsay.

Read Resolucio MAH/520/2006 it might clear things up.

I am very aware of the law as are most of the other guides and anglers that live and fish in catalunya, with regards to my advert on my website obviously it states that we buoy fish with eels[not carp as previosly mentioned in your post]but we generally used this method before the ban came into force,i mainly fish from the bank for the cats now using alternative methods and bait and i can honestly say am outfishing live bait methods anyway generally catching bigger cats too and holding them in the swim for longer!!!

I cannot vouch for other guides and companys but then their buisiness pratices are their own,i only run my company [LEGALLY] so if you fancy seeing the ebroslayer at work doing what he does best, book a trip next year with www.ebroadventure.com and see the proffesionals at work!!!!!!!!!!

Hi splinter,

just to clear up the point of taking eels from the ebro, when we did use eels at ebro adventure they were bought from the coast [ebre delta] and bought legally before being used as bait, obviously before the ban!!!

with regards to you seeing a guide from Riba and i know who he is,catching his bait does not mean everyone partakes in this pratice which is wrong but you cant tar everyone with the same brush!!!!

Good anglers can adapt and catch just as many fish if not more in my case to any bait ban or rule so please dont judge every guide in the Riba/Flix area with the same rule, its totally not the case and completely unfair, cheers mate, slayer! :)
