  1. There is probably a lot of attention being given to this research by biologists in the US looking for a solution to the Asian Carp infestation of the Missouri River. If they decide to unleash the virus there it could wipe out carp fishing in the whole watershed. They want to keep Asian Carp from taking hold in the Great Lakes so if they use it in the Missouri River it could potentially kill every carp in connected waterways, including the St Lawrence. That's a lot of carp. The Great Lakes hold over %20 of the world's fresh water and I'd worry about any virus going in, versus danger from the Asian Carp (which also could potentially render a body of water sterile).
  2. I tried to sign it but I don't do Stalkbook so I can't. Spr1985 is right, everyone grow up.

  8. These guys played our old bar in the 80's when rockabilly was getting big, and the bass player was a Brit and he was a real clown, once he got drunk after closing he just wanted to fight so we just totally ignored him. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JCCYZefQmvs

  12. Re: Leicester. I'm watching the news here and they just had an item saying the owner flew in Tibetan monks to bless the team. Credit has been given to Richard III getting a decent burial as well, though the sports analysts lean toward Leicester filling the gap created by other teams' poor performance. The first 5000 - 1 winner ever in 138 years of Ladbroke betting according to their spokesman. Justin Beiber has 5 times more chance of being elected president of the US. Until something more unexpected happens this is being touted as the greatest upset in modern sports history. I didn't realise it was that big.
  13. Swamptrout is the intentional release of invasive species a problem in Oz? We've had a few problems with people chucking their pond or aquarium fish in the local lakes or rivers when they got big, or setting a pet store fish free to symbolically honour a dead relative (still have trouble understanding that one), and they can do some real damage. In Vancouver a few years ago there was a snakehead found in a little park lake prompting calls for a ban on the sale of some live fish.

  17. I think that jibes with the news, iirrc they said a $5 bet could pay $25,000 at 5000 - 1. Good game to win! [emoji3] My 2 sports channels show 1 Premier League game live and one on delay in 5 minutes, but no mention which games they are and the tv guide app says Sports Centre (a commentary programme) on instead of football. Now I know! They cut the first half to show the Russian Gran Prix on both channels, oh well. Tie game at the half..[emoji12]
  18. Leicester City are in the news even in Canada, shots of pubs with patrons waiting for the match with Man U. They said a $5 bet could pay a huge dividend if history is made and they win.

  20. That seems dangerous, I only use 12# mainline and a rig of 7" - 12" so that short piece of braid and a swivel is all that's left on the fish after a break. Perhaps if using a strong leader a weaker rig should be used. When I want to check for rig strength I just rig up as if for fishing, set the hook in the edge of the kitchen cupboard and walk backwards until it breaks. That will show you where your line will part if you get snagged.
  21. When I started carping I always had mono rigs of weaker line than my mainline but switched to braid eventually. I tried fine braid but (fish safety considerations aside) wasn't able to cast them without rigs tangling so after trying a mate's 20# braided rigs started tying my own. As Nick says when things get German the line always seems to part at the knot. I've never had a major mainline break leaving a fish with a long tether but have landed a fish that was tied to a snag overnight and when I got it out found 30' of mono still trailing. Rather than blame this on unsafe angling I class it as a bizarre underwater accident. The man who caught it first explained that by the time he realised he had a fish on it was already tying knots around a submerged tree root. Since the only way I carp fish is with a simple running rig the chances of ever leaving fish and lead connected are remote.
