  1. I've briefly heard about but can't find any information about a lake around 2 acres in size near Ludborough in Lincolnshire. Does anyone know anything of the sort? Can't seem to turn up any information. Otherwise what waters are known around Louth/Grimsby/Cleethorpes area in NE Lincolnshire. Looking for things that aren't the usual commercial venues. Fulstow was where I really got into my fishing as a kid, plagued by rats then and I think the same ones are a few feet long by the sounds of it now. Any tips on syndicates in the area would be appreciated. Got one lined up a few hours away from me that I would love to get onto but looking for something close by too. Thanks all!
  2. Firstly, I could do with some background info on bobbins and bite indication. For example, what do you use for short range, medium distance and long range fishing? How are they set? What about weather conditions such as wind? Tight lines vs slack lines?! Give me all the info you have.... Is there anything that can be done to help indicate lateral movement on the line? Secondly, what system or set up should I be looking at to suit the situations you have presented?! Go on, recommend something for me Tight lines to those out over the weekend!
  3. I suspect that's where things started out before various companies started to market them as angling equipment. I'll be doing the same myself bud so thumbs up from me!
  4. I just don't like the idea of cracking my head on the internal pitch point on the brolly. It's also 100 quid more than a good quality tarp and 3x2.2m tarp that comes in at 1.1kg. Only need one support and a few pegs. Still doing research if there is anything better but 130 for a brolly when I already have a bivvy seems a bit of a splash of cash to me.
  5. I'm seriously considering some kind of tarp for keeping dry on day sessions and getting in the summer over night sessions. 3 or 4 pegs and one or two poles to keep the front up. Nice and quick to take down, bungee to a rod bag and move swims
  6. Again, thanks mate. For now I need to get into some fishing before I make any more rod choices I think. Will have a read through for my next set of decision making though
  7. Yeah, I've been umming and ahhing about the second spool but I think for sure some with fluorocarbon on for the shallows will be needed in the arsenal, mainly my snagging.
  8. To be honest they were on my list first time around until I went through the chart. Yeah, tough to dispute the Daiwa sensor clear to be honest. It was springy on my Shimano which put me off it. You generally fishing murky or clear waters? I remember the Sensor sinks alright. I think it was maybe the line diameter was marginally higher than the Shimano which put me off it?
  9. Right, after looking around and doing some digging I figured this.... Shimano Aero Specimen 18lb. It seem Shimano manufacture about +30% tolerance into their line - based on that chart it seems consistent. I hope that it would be through their range, but that is where that chart puts the curve ball in. It also appears that they are reasonably consistent with their advertised line diameters. Theoretically, then, if you would be prepared to accept these positives and ignore the potential that their Aero line could fall outside the above tolerances (certainly possible) then the 18 should run between 23-26lb average at 0.36mm?! Sounds reasonably good to me. If you factor cost into it too then even better. So, forget the second spools and just load up with this for the season I think. My only concern is how well it breaks surface tension to start sinking and how supple it is. Any guesses? And yeah, brilliant link mate, properly helped me out! Otherwise, it'll be back on to Daiwa Sensor and we'll deal with some springing!
  10. Right then, rods sorted....hopefully reels by the end of the day. I'm trying to be as technical as possibly with my approach - not so much for the carp but for myself. Trying to main diligent rather than pillocking about! So - covering as many bases as possible (I won't always carry this stuff, but want to keep my options simple). Rod 1-3: Spool 1 - 15lb mono - I'm thinking GT HD or Pro 15 Spool 2 - 20lb mono - Not sure, something that will be a different tone to spool 1 to give some more options. Probably I want this one for clearer water thinking about where I want to end up Rod 4: The quick change rod - this one is for when I spot something in the margins (generally I fish at 80-120 range at a guess) so I can reel one in and be ready to drop straight out again.... Spool 1 - 20lb fluorocarbon - suitable for heavy snag fishing and getting sunk quickly in the margins Spool 2 - 15lb floating line - ready for surface fishing should the weather and mood take me Rod 5: The Broom Stick rod - just want it set up separately as I hope to go after my first catfish later in the year Spool 1 - ?!?! - No idea where to start here. Preferably not a braided mainline. Spool 2 - Something for piking it out in winter Rod 6: The Spod Rod Spool 1 - Already has 15lb Fox Spod/Marker Braid No second spool.... As an added bonus I'm trying to set up myself with all the same reels so each spool is interchangeable too! Not necessary but an added bonus. So, given my specs, let me know what I should be looking at for loading up. And if anyone knows where to get 1000m+ on a roll let me know! I hope the lids have started to thaw off for you - t'other brother said Wentworth was iced over on the walk around yesterday. Cheers, Jim
  11. Just managed to get 3 Daiwa Mission DF (eeek - swearing ban?) for 150. Look good as new to me! Let you know how I get on with them
  12. By this time next year Rodders....we'll be bagging up!
  13. Getting back around mid march to be fair. Got plenty to sort out when I get back so that could be perfect time to start bagging up on gear at least. In theory everyone is starting to upgrade or sack it in by then.
  14. Perfect for fishing the fair margins there mate 😂 I know I can get good range with my Shimano XTEAs so all good there. Will keep an eye out on some deals and steals (sale of the ...... century)
  15. Ouch on the busted Sonik! I'll be looking at medium to long range fishing on most of my waters I expect - not that I'll ignore the shallows. But I'll certainly need something I could get out 110 plus I think. Tend to use smaller sticks not bags so it could be possible?
  16. Any other info on the older Sonik gear? Can pick up some good deals on some of it but tough to find the much info on there stuff. The t'other brother has been going in to Erik's for ten years at a guess so I can always get him to give them a shout for me too.
  17. Yeah they have been in my list bud. Along with the Sonik SKX alarms I'm looking at, so at least it'll make a tarty set
  18. Good to know about the Shimano's - I'm trying to stay pretty light at the moment. To be honest I'd rather get something slightly better used that buy new. Whatever I get I want it to last until near destruction; however long that might be. Cheers bud.
  19. Anyone starting to warm up yet? Having to piece together my carp gear again after t'other Anglin' Brother sold a bunch off whilst I've been out of country. At the moment I've still got 1 Shimano 10000XTE-A and will pick up a few more as I'm a huge fan of the balance on these. The rods I currently have are a Fox Trekker 7pc which has been my travel for the last 10 years give or take. I also have another Shimano but I honestly can't remember the model on it. These two rods will stay as a summer stalker and a marker/spod for the time being. So, I need a 3 rod set up. As SWMBO is keeping the purse strings tight as we move back I'm looking to buy used, probably in a budget of around 150-200. At the moment I've narrowed down by requirements to: 50mm butt ring/12ft/3.25tc This basically means I'm looking at the following rods in this kind of range; what would you recommend? -Shimano Tribal Velocity -Daiwa Powermesh -Avid Traction I'm not sure what else I like the look of in this used bracket price range - so what else would you recommend I add to the list to keep an eye out for? Cheers all Jim
  20. What bed chair did you end up with? I'm looking at trying to keep all my gear light and scaled back too until the big bivvy needs to come out in late Autumn. Bed chair is the bane of doing this for me, hate lugging around the lump I currently have! To be honest for just an over nighter I'd love to find another option to scrap the bed chair altogether - just not figured out what it is yet?!
  21. Alright all, First thing I saw here is the blog/diary area. Thought it would be a good idea to start the Journey before I even land in the UK in a few months time. That way, you lucky lot can follow my carp fishing journey from the very beginning. I haven't had any series sessions for 8 years, although the odd line has been in here and there, producing nothing of note. I'm very much excited to get back to the UK carp scene and looking forward to spending a good few hours on the bank with my brother again. My previous carping history has generally been on harder and larger waters. Something I naturally prefer, but this year I'm going to make sure I'm getting bends in the rod. Of course I have already eyed up a few larger looking venues to get me excited for a bigger campaign, but these year has to have realistic targets. My current PB stands at 28lb 12oz, a mirror coming out of Cromwell Lakes, and I'm honestly not too focused on getting over that by the end of the year - of course, if it comes I'll take the bonus! My realistic targets for this year are going to be: 20lb Leather 23lb Common 25lb Mirror I think these are at least somewhat realistic for the 9 months of fishing I'll have available until the end of the year (I wish that was a solid 9 months too). If I get to achieve these goals I'll put a shout out later in the year and push to take on a challenge from the diary readers here. If anyone has advice or suggestions along the way then let me know. As for now, job 1 is becoming a tackle tart again. Watch this space to see what I can get together. TL Jim
