ste1984
Hiya guys, When do you use normal fishing line as hooklength, instead of braid etc? (Thats if you do lol)
bo85tain
sometimes yes,if iam struggling for bite's make a big long hair give the bait plenty of movement, with a long hook length something like12-16 inches when everyone is struggling they usually go short and heavy i go long and it work's try it
hnv
I often use mono as a hooklink but would not entertain using it for the hair (too stiff). I make a hair from kryston samson or drennan hair braid, thread it through the eye, hold tight against shank and whip a knotless knot over the top. This a gives a stiff(ish) rig with a lovely supple hair (keep the hair long too).
Guest keenook
I think Bazil was caught at over 40+ on a 6lbs Maxima hooklink???
northeastcarper
usually switch to something like a 10lb double strengtrh hooklink on me local in winter when it is hard. or other times when im struggling for a bite.
ste1984
Thanks for the replies guys. What are the disadvantages with fishing with it. I am getting the impression that when the goings tough, switch to mono hooklink for more bites. So why not fish with it all the time if it works ? ste1984
Im going to give it a go on one rod next week me thinks never tried it. Someone mentioned that it is not good to use as a hair. How do you connect different material to the hookling to form a hair ?
chris71
I fish most of the time with mono/fluro. I have some braid but just prefer the monos...don't know why maybe someone can convince me to use braid a bit more

ste1984
Yeah I saw that, but how do you connect it. Sorry I know im being totally dumb. But all I have ever done is use one peice of braid for hair and hooklength :S (if that makes any sense at all.)

A fair few people use the same line for their hooklink as their mainline, with the standard mainline to hooklink swivel as the join. A Mono hooklink doesn't tangle as easily as a braided one. For the hair I use either hair braid from ESP being as I bought some years ago and still have some left, or 4lb mono. Unlike HNV I tie a blood or uni knot with it through the eye of the hook, and then silicon or shrink tubing over the eye/shank to hold it in place, and a Uni knot to attach the hook to the hooklink. northeastcarper
u could try just tying the hook on with a whipping knot, knotless knot but obv dont have the hair coming off it. trim it down. and tie your hair to your hookshank using very fine supple braid or light mono. try it at different positions on the shank ,ie oposite the point, on the bend etc. n see how it goes see which gets better hook holds
gnorty
There is not really much strain on the hair - you could probably just lay it along the back of the hook alongside a dummy hair of the hooklength. tie knotless knot and cut the dummy hair as appropriate. can't see a carp sucking that off the hook tbh. personally I just use mono for the hair, but I generally use low BS mono hooklinks as there are very few snags. can cause a problem with pellets as the hair has no purchase on the drilled pellet hole, but specialist pellet stoppers do the job a treat. muscle20
as im still fairly new to all the various rigs etc, i started to tie my own from the start.i have always just used the same hooklink as my main(10 or 12 lb) but sometimes in brown and some in clear and have not had too much trouble with the hair being too stiff i think. what would the signs of the hair being too stiff be and would this be less so on short hairs. The stiffness means that the hook position in relation to the bait is somewhat predictable. I guess it depends on the thickness of the nylon used though - I tend to use quite low BS nylon for hooklinks, so it is not really that stiff.
