I have always tied mono straight to my reel. Why are you not ment to do that? Saying that I have never had any problems doing that!

I was reading down this thread and it was said what I was thinking...with regard to tightening the boilie closer to the hook....It's the same in any walk of life...take advice from people but decide for yourself what you think the best thing to do is!
