  1. i do not feel i need to use a helicoptor rig or a running lead with lead core i use 22lb braided main line ,45lb leadcore leader, i splice the leadcore both ends atttached my main line direct to the leader and my hooklink to a swivel usualy no higher than a 12lb braicking strian , i slide a safety clip onto the leadcore down to the swivel making sure if i lift the leadcore the clip with lead attached will run backwards with out force. After landing a carp my tail stop is always i mean always half way up my line, now in my mind and has only ever happened is that the hooklink will snap first. ive never had a leadcore leader give on me in about 6 years or more of using them. but if it did i know for sure the lead would be ejected. Is this still a death rig? so i dont see the difference with this or a helicopter rig or running lead. i understand that the carp will trail the leadcore until it ejects the hook but i myself have never come acroos this but i have caught carp with yards of snapped off mono wrapped around them with the tubbing pushed very tight over the swivel with no chance of coming off. which can cause exstream damage to.
  2. kryston mantis for me wouldn't say it was stiffer than snakebite but knots much better and i feel gives a much better presentation the diamiter is much less too, a friend of mine uses striptease and must say i would give that a try too.
  3. a friend of mine uses this rig salok with putty around the swivel for he's pop up rigs, has done really well on these.but if i try them he'l rib me for nicking hes ideas
  4. i would never fish without a shock leader as they serve several purposes my view is i've never lifted a scale from a fish by using leadcore in long lenghs as ive seen with ppl using really short lenghs of tubeing or no shock leader at all.it stops crack offs, and keeps your line pinned down avoiding spooking the fish. when fishing on bars they really do take the brunt of all the grinding.but by creating the weakest point at the hooklink end that's where ive only ever exspeirianced it going.if it did go where the line attaches to the the leadcore i always make sure my lead clip goes up and down my leadcore effortlessly so worst case i mean worst case i guess it would trail the lead core but as ive said ive never lost a leader yet, and change them a soon as they even look like they need it.
  5. i always use a leadcore leader spliced both ends and try to get away with the lowest breaking strain hook link i can with a safety clip. ive never had the leacore go on me yet i have the hookling once at the swivel. but have broke lead clips on the cast ,leaving the lead on the bank
  6. christ these posts really got me thinking but first of all it made me think why do i use the rigs i use i prefer short stiff rigs i have been using mantis for a good few years now i say short anywhere between 5 and 7 inches and peeled back at least an inch from the hook. i just add putty at the gather for pop ups or ballanced hook baits. i used to use silkworm and tryed loads of other uncoated braids at longer lenghs say 12 inches but when fishing at distance they sometimes came back with a knot in and had always felt that there wasn't any point using longer hook links as they would probably fold back on themselfs and end up near the lead anyway. but as the same with longer hair lenghs i guess would feel more natural on the pick up, but would that give the carp to much thinking time when there mouthing baits and aid rejection. this really is a mind field because theres pros and cons to all rigs stiff short long and more supple.but i also think thats the beauty of using braid as a main line it gives such a superb bite indication.you can afford to exsperiment a bit. i feel conferdent in using a stiffer material i.e. mantis in an average of 6-7 inches.maybe i should try going longer with the stiffer material. ive have to say i think longer lenghs of lead core anything up to 6-8 even 10 feet has made a difference to my catch rate compaired a group i fish with using an average of 3 feet ,that and slack lines. i don't get the dreaded bleep then nothing, which i feel is fish feeling line gets spooked. the guy i fish with uses mono fished tight to the lead and he gets i feel fish deffenatly spooking of the line.as for complicated rigs isn't enouth of a head ache trying to get these small points right.
