Well done for "sticking to your guns". It makes such a refreshing change to read posts on here about someone who has actually thought their fishing through by experimenting and comparing results (in other words..... 'Getting off their own backside to do it for themselves') instead of expecting all the answers on a plate for them.

What do you expect from fishing a commercial lake? I wouldnt touch one with a barge pole cos catching 'X' amount of fish in a hour is not fishing to me.
Its all about money for the owner and unfortunately fish welfare is definately not at the top of the list.

It was on a Matt Hayes programme that he used a feeder with great success on the Monument. It seemed he used it like a lead on a lead clip arrangement with anti tangle tubing behind the tail rubber.
It seemed to work for him Steve but im not sure of the safety aspect of the feeder having to release in case of a line breakage.

Its my opinion Steve based on experiences and observations, albeit limited. Obviously im not saying its right, but i have far more confidence in my approach by fishing pop ups (if the fishing situation warrants it) without the use of an added PVA stick, and my results prove that.
The reason being, a stick is supposed to add attraction to a hookbait. The contents of the stick mix will be hard on the deck of the lake, yet the pop should be wafting above it. To me thats unnatural and defeats the object of using the stick in the first place. Why attract the fish to the bottom of the lake to feed, then put it on guard by using a bait off it? To me it doesnt add up. Like i said, im confident in my approach that i can get more takes when using pop ups without the stick, than when using one.
On the flipside, im also unsure of the presentation side of things. I dont want to risk my critically balanced pop up being snarled up in weed or bottom detrius when the stick takes it down to the lake bed cos the damn thing may get caught up and not sit like its supposed to do.
Thank heavens for dissolving foam, that stuff is a godsend
Obviously other people may think different, so it would be good to hear their views

I gotta admit ive never crimped anything (apart from my wire pike traces). So i really cant comment on this im afraid. All i know is that Wychwood do, or did do a crimping set. Thats all the advice i can give.

Thats why i got on the offensive.
Cos when i use a choody rig, im using the lightest lead i can get away with just to get the required distance, my lines are slack and the bobbins are hard on the deck

if you dont want to use boilies on the chod you can use pop up corn or tiger nut. the enterprise ones should be buoyent enough if not use a piece of matching foam as well.
One question?
Have you ever used a chod rig? You may find that a small piece of plastic and a bit of foam is not bouyant enough to hold up a size 5 Stiff Rigger and a Bristle Filament hooklink..... FACT!
Not even most shop bought pop ups can do this. The only ones that are bouyant enough are the Richworth Airo and the Nutrabaits Alternative Hookbaits. Believe me ive wasted enough money to find this fact out the hard way. Why do you think that i now make my own pop ups at home, tailored to my own exact requirements

If you want to fish the chod rig, the ONLY way to fish it is by using pop ups and baiting with a scattering of boilies over a wide-ish area. You MUST make the fish pick a bait up, move off and look for another. Think about it..... You are using a pop up which on a chod hooklink could be between 2 or 3" off the deck, but you have a small tight pile of groundbait, chopped boilie and pellet on the lake bed.
How unnatural does that look?
It immediately makes the fish suspicious of the pop up boilie, so much so that they will ignore it. Its the same principal of anglers using a stick mix or PVA bag on a normal pendant or inline lead set up, but then deciding to fish over the top of it with a pop up, i really dont think the tactic works.
Some people say it does and they have caught by doing so, but i think the pop up is taken long after the stick mix has either dissolved and dispersed around the swim, or the groundbait has been eaten. If they had just used a pop up on its own without the stick mix, im certain they would have had the take and caught the fish much sooner.
Do you understand what im saying?

1. My thought being new to fishing is the stik mix,stringers and pva bags etc are meant to give a tight carpet of bait around your hook, so i know you can use it with inline setups but will it still work the same with a choddy rig being the swivel is free to go up-down the leader and im fishing a pop-up?
Im fearing that the pva of some sort may hinder or tangle the setup Did or did i not answer this question in this thread?.....

I would imagine lots and lots of people still used dangerous rigs back in the day.
You only have to watch some of John Wilsons rigs in his TV programmes to agree with this Paul. I saw him use his "shock" rig on an old estate lake and the lead was tied on with a so called "rotten bottom" straight to the mainline. If the rotten bottom didnt snap, they was no way that the lead would discharge from the mainline after a break.
He also put on 2 SSG shot about 1 and 2 foot away from the rotten bottom knot on the mainline to act like a backlead.
If any of us tackled up like that nowadays we would get shot.

There is no excuse today as there is a wealth of knowledge on forums such as this one and in mag's ect today, which was not available 20 years ago, so why do people still use these "death" rigs? Is it that they can't be bothered, or that they just don't care???
Personally i think the mags are partly to blame.
Newcomers to carp angling see endless pics of 30lb+ fish in the gallery pages and think that that is the norm. They see it as all you have to do is just turn up to your local hole in the ground, throw out some ready made "kits" as you call them noknot, use the latest bait that has just hit the shelves and wait for the fish to crawl up your rod blank.
If they see it has easy has that do you really think that they care what rigs they are using, dangerous or not? I dont think they do. They just want the "big fish" on the mat cos that is what the mags have brainwashed people who dont know better into thinking.
To be honest its nothing short of peer pressure. It seems that a lot of anglers who see these gallery pics are just on the look out to get one over on their fellow carp fisherman just for bragging rights. So they will risk anything just to try and past the imaginary finishing post first, regardless of the consequences.

Both times i've shown to baliff but what can they do? Check every1's rig?
I feel sorry for Baliffs as there suck in a 20/20 situation, if they ask to see every anglers rig they'll be seen as interfearing, but they have/need to look after there stock
I was on a quick early morning session yesterday down a local club water and i when i was packing up there was a guy just recasting and after a quick chat i told him that i was a bailiff and i asked him to see if i could see his rig and thank goodness, he didnt mind at all.
Even better, even though his leader was leadcore and he was using a semi fixed clip arrangement which i personally dont like to use on leadcore leaders, the clip did dump the lead quite easily. I just told him to make sure that the tail rubber wasnt on too tight and he took the advice well.
But i could imagine some anglers not taking the advice well and wondering why they should listen to someone like me and in no uncertain terms telling me to get lost. And its bound to happen at least once.

You will have to wait until someone really in the know comes along to explain the scientific bit cos i dont know. All i do know is that they are both different from one another, they have different properties and flouro is a lot more expensive than mono. Just look at your ESP Ghost spool, it actually says 'Flourocarbon' on the label
After all, would you pay £5 for a 20m spool of monofilament?
