I am a rookie fly rodder and had the exasperating experience of actually getting close to some carp feeding in shallow brackish water today with their tails up. I was in my inflatable kayak, with a non nautical passenger, using a featherweight 6'6" soft action glass rod, five wieight line, and a vintage pflueger 1554 SAL-TROUT reel. Did have 200 yards or so of backing. Between the wind and my infantile casting, could not induce any of the tailers to fall for my fake bug on a string trick. Does anybody here fly fish for carp? Any guesses on a fly pattern for tailing carp in murky brown shallow soft bottom litoral rivers? My black wooly booger with flashaboo strips did not impress them...... Any and all advice is appreciated. It was so exciting to be able to get within feet of these big tails sticking up, feel like I will be taking the flat water sleigh ride before the summer is over. If'n I don't it wont be for lack of trying. Anywho, would love to hear any advice or war stories from members here in the states or elsewhere who have landed carp with a fly rod. If you want some good info on this you can check out www.uscarppromagazine.com Its a great online magazine with a wealth of info. In particular, the section called "fluff chuckin" which is specifically geared towards fly fishing and is in every issue. Be sure to check out the back issues on yudu. Hope this helps. perldog007 Posted August 6, 2009 Author Report Share Posted August 6, 2009 Thanks, I have retired all of my rods for a spell while I am waiting for a fit of boat building to pass. Finally decided to add to my fleet. My current flagship is a great inflatable kayak that goes anywhere, but is tough after a couple of hours as you can't stand up. Going to build a Bolger Brick and see how it turns out. As soon as I have a platform I can stand up and cast from, going to take a whirl at those tailing carp I have found. FLYROD1 Posted May 29, 2017 Report Share Posted May 29, 2017 Until recently I had only ever caught two carp besides a flyrod.....I can tell you that tailing carp are feeding, so if you get a wooly [censored] in front of them without scaring them by moving it toward them, you should catch one. When a carp sees a nymph, crawfish, helgramite, minnow, etc. close enough to catch, it will eat it. By making sure the carp sees it, then bringing it away (fleeing from) the carp may chase and eat it, otherwise it will scare the carp instead. You may catcharp on a floating fly as well. Use a catterpiller or mayfly imitation coasted overhead, and subtle twitching at the proper moment can induce a strike! Good luck....its a lot of fun!! psychodiagnostik Posted October 10, 2019 Report Share Posted October 10, 2019 I've trout fished here in NC with a guide who catches carp on the fly... but he told me conditions needed to be correct, and he said he'd only done it during a mayfly hatch in late spring on one of our big lakes. Then, it's non-stop action from carp in a mayfly feeding frenzy, apparently in this mode they'll hit any mayfly pattern. Thanks, Doug I know I'm very late to this thread. Caught my first carp (Mirror) on an olive green Wooly[censored] while fly-fishing for bass using a 6wt. flyrod on the Delaware River in PA. From that moment on I've considered myself a carp fisherman. Up there with Salmon on the fly as far as pure fun and amazing fight goes.
