Longshank hooking properties

I started carp fishing about 3 years ago and from the start I've always been using a wide gape pattern for both bottom baits and pop ups. I can see how the pattern works. It's the longshank pattern that I can't figure out.

Can someone explain the mechanics of this hook so I know how and when to use them?

Cheers.

the longshank allows the hook to flip on the very slightest of pressure without the need for tubing and the shank itself lends itself to some useful anti-eject properties, But the hook is much larger than what you are used to, weight wise and size. So give them a go, they have done well for me in the past, and i will continue using them when i feel the need to :D
