angler_ali
Is there any relation between size of pop up and hook size? The other question being, is there any correlation between the size of hook, pop up and the length of hair? Regards, Ali..
rosstheangler
Nice to see you back on Ali. I don't think there is any hard and fast rule. If I was using a 15mm bottom bait with a size 8 hook, I'd use a size 10 for a 15mm pop up. It's a confiddnce thing for me. Having a big bit of metal floating above the bottom seems a bit hinky. angler_ali
Thank Ross, appreciate your reply. Actually In case we use a small hook with a big pop up, will it turn and bite ? The other thing is, can we use a pop up setup with a floating feeder? Some big fishes are destroying my feeder bait without getting hooked. Is there a way to increase the hookup percentage?? This is an SOS guys..
rosstheangler
As long as you're rig is tied properly I can't see it being a problem. This is only my preference for pop-ups, like I said it's a confidence thing. One my friends uses a size 6 hook for all his rigs. I assume you are using a lot bigger hooks for the Mumbai monsters you go after As to the floating feeder question I'm not really sure what it is. Some guy's on here (cobleyn off the top of my head) fish exotic places and will probably be more help on that one.
angler_ali
Thanks once again, I use size #8 & size #6 hooks paired with size 12 or 10 mm pop ups. I have not hooked anything using more than 12 mm pop ups. May be it is a confidence thing for me also. I still believe that for the best mechanism of hair rig, there has to be a correlation between the three factors ie. Diameter of the hook bend, Size of Pop up and length of hair. From the point of view of engineering (Trigonometry), the point of hook should be outside the plane of hypothetical triangle made by diameter of the pop up and the eye of hook. Someone must have surely done some study on this subject! By the way, what length of hair you use for your size #10 hook and 15mm pop up setup? Regards, Ali.. briandki
hmmm trigonometry...that takes me back know when i fish a pop up i like to keep the hair fairly short so as to keep the hook 'hidden' under the bait, usually tied on to a ring on a small D. like on a choddy! i think when you look at it in the edge, a 16mm bait on a size 6 will leave the point of the hook falling outside the plane of the hypothetical triangle . when i use a pop up as part of a snowman set up, the length of the hair is determined by the way the fish are feeding, the more confident, the longer the hair. hope this is of some use

Your observation about the D,ring or Chod rig is absolutely right as the pop up is at an angle to the shank but the question being, can this rig be paired with a floating setup. The other question, which may seem silly but is of utmost importance to me is, how does a hair rig function. Is the fish hook itself while spitting the hook out or the fish has to move a bit with the hook in its mouth to get hooked. If the second scenario is correct (Which I guess is the case) then the floating feeder becomes redundant as the effective weight of the feeder being zero inside water, due to buoyancy. In case the fish is lifting the bait, there is no weight applied to hook the fish. The only chance of hookup is when the fish is pulling the bait down. I suspect that is the reason why the hookup percentage is very low in comparison to the amount of feeding happening on the feeder. The best results are when I place the feeder near surface and hence forcing the fish to pull the bait down. But then there must be some method to increase hookups mid water. I did try feeder setup on the principal of zig rig (A buoyant feeder, anchored to bottom with a three ounce weight) but with very little success. In a hypothetical situation, If the fish is absolutely still and sucks the hair rig in and then spit it out, will the blow back hook it?? Regards, Ali.
