  1. Hi I am looking at ways to use my IQ2 ( not sure if to use 15lb or 20lb ) to get the best out of the stiff material, but have a soft braid hair

I know the combi rig, Albright Knot but what other ways can I make the hookink yet have a soft braid hair ?

I have considered making a braid hair and when using the knotless know with the IQ2 trap the braid hair under it , how does that sound ?

  2. Noticed that people use hooklink anti tangle sleeves less and less now, I have always put them on put they are a pain when trying to slide the hooklink through a PVA Bag, the sleeve comes off in the bag !

Any reason they are out of fashion or are they deemed unnecessary ?

  3. Bobs & E has a very big head of carp. Unfortunately it has had a bit of an otter problem as the BTO won't let us fence this lake in. However the predation has been very minimal.

The recent Xmas match that a few if the lads fish every year produced several fish to a few ounces under 30lb. There are several carp over 30 in there up to mid 30.

Stick at it, talk to longer term members & suss out best swims, rigs & bait. There are plenty of runs waiting to happen.

    Thanks Bullet

The other members have all been helpful, suggestions and which swims fish better and I have seen the pictures of the fish caught recently.

Lets face it this is a hard time of the year for any venue regardless of stock.

Funny thing is some say E lake is easier, others say Bobs !

I have sent you a PM

  4. There have been a few losses on West Stow, however as of today the lake is now fully fenced in. This will eliminate any problem we have had. The lake has a fabulous stock of stunning fish, with a large number of 30lb plus fish & an on going stocking program.

On the Nunnery, the main carp lakes, A lake & D lake have been fully fenced in for sometime now & haven't had any losses to otters at all.

Hi can you advise me about stocks on E and Bobs, I have recently joined and not seen much come out, have those lakes suffered to otters ?

I love the place but yet to catch my first fish, great people up there and a very pretty place

  5. Seems to be a common plan in large waters, chuck in several kilos of bait and fish over it, to me that doesn't make sense especially in winter time

I plan to try my simple single bait approach for a while and see the results plus the savings in bait

Granted if you can pre bait a regular spot it is a proven tactic but if you havnt the chance to do this other methods are needed to catch

  6. Yes my main water is very special but also hard to catch, Middle Res was a nice break to test that a single boilie without any freebies will be enough to catch in a large venue.

In the past I have been using PVA bags and always casting out with a small bag attached, I think winter time adding freebies such as this isn't the best tactic to catch.

Funny thing was other anglers here often put in a lot of bait, today I had two pop ups and nothing else went in !

  7. Just a few words about this reservoir approx. 4 acres 14 ft deep outskirts of Bury St Edmunds and part of the Bury AA

Although not many features and has steep banks, it has some very nice fish and decent stocks with carp to 30lb

I joined for the winter ticket costing £32.50 ! as a back up water

Very good value for money and worth a look but note this is not suitable for night fishing / bivvies as limited space and night restrictions unless agreed by the club and they do sell day tickets so summer may get busy with younger anglers etc

I am very impressed with this basic reservoir and it blessed me with a 14lb common today in high winds and rain

  8. I understand, I too fish on my own but always chat to others for tips etc

Some I ignore as tips others I use to my advantage

I think carp fishing lends itself to going with a buddy as there is a lot of waiting time, however when fishing with a buddy you tend to

    1. stay put in the same swims

    2. choose swims together so you can chat

    3. less focus on the fishing

    4. less watching the water and moving

My advice learn as much as you can about the right way and then do your own thing as to be different as long as safe to the fish

    Remember its fishing not camping

  9. Unless you're fishing over abrasive materials such as gravel bars , rocks etc i cant see the need for rig tubing . Never used tubing or leaders . Never had the need , and leadcore of course , is just dangerous.

Nothing is better camoflaged than your mainline .

What about the added sink weight on Mono ?

Would you add putty or nothing ?

  10. That first point you make is very clever dal , about protecting the hookpoint from the lead ?

Never occured to me before , probably because i usually have the bottom bead a good 12-18 inches above the lead .

I wonder if anybody else does that ?

Use the rig foam on the choddy i mean .

So if bottom bead is up the line and I do not need an indicator on the surface for freebies I can ignore the pva nugget

I will look at using the Korda Naked rigs system on my Mono main line, any comments to that setup as I think its designed to be used on mono or fluro main lines. How far apart do you have the beads and long or short chod rigs ? I know how long is a piece of string but if you had to start somewhere which and what would you suggest ?

  11. In my humble opinion and having used the rig a fair bit and asked myself the same questions-

The lower bead should be far enough away from the lead to stop the hook touching it and risk blunting

I try and fish the top bead at the depth of any weed, or if its free of "vertical" weed, maybe 1 - 2 feet apart

I try and fish the line "straight" by which I mean not tight, but not slack enough that its as direct to the bait as possible. I like the line as close to the bottom as possible, and fish it "naked" rather than with a leader. I think a chod fished on a tight line risks the bait hanging in the water and looks wrong, particularly at shortish range

I'm sure there are occasions when a fish swims towards me with the bait, but I'm not worried about losing any sensitivity or indication, particularly if the line is "straight" as I described. There's a lot on this forum from some good anglers about line movement in water- it moves very differently to how it would in the air.

I reserve the right to be totally wrong, but it's how I do it and I'm very confident with it.

What sort of venue are you fishing? I'd be interested to know how you get on

Venue is small carp lake with stock 8lb to 25lb close range stuff approx. 6 ft deep in places

  12. Trying the chod rig tomorrow with chod rig leader etc

They are the ESP leaders and Korda chod rig but my question is

    1. On a fairly clear bottom where should I position the lower rubber bead

    2. how far apart should the top stop bead be from the bottom bead

    3. Fish slack lines or tight

    4. if fishing slack what about drop backs ?
