Is there any way of finding out the depth of the silt?

I just thought of trying something completely different to every one else who fishes the lake, they all seem to use the lead clip and most of them are using korda leaders as leadcore is banned and I wouldn't use it anyway. I have been using Nash Limpit camo leaders on a lead clip and a short braided hooklink about 3-4 inches on with nash Fang twister hook (even tried KD style bottom bait), whereas everyone else seems to use about 6+ inch hooklength

Has anyone ever a chod/silt style rig for a standard bottom bait or would it work?? The reason I ask is one of the lakes I fish has a shallow covering of silt and although a normal lead clip works I would like to try something different apart from a running rig
