in simple mate its like an upside down float set up. you still have your lead on the botom but ya bait(bouyant bait, popups , foam etc) goes up, it allows you to fish a bait at anything from a few inches off the bottom to a few inches below the surface and everywhere inbetween. hope that helps mate
