Anyone fishing?

I'm 50/50 whether to go on Friday. Conditions looks great on paper but maybe a bit early in the year yet? Only thing holding me back is the fact I will have to set up in the rain and I have no idea of spots on the lake I will be fishing. May just take the opportunity to get soaked, find some spots around the lake and give it a bit of bait

It's still well early. All these chaps worrying about blanking, it's completely normal, you're not doing owt wrong. Yes the odd fish will come out but depending on your lake depths we're weeks away from the carp really getting on it. By all means get some bait going in but no-one should be expecting instant action in Feb, no matter what the temps are doing. It is worth going but at this time of year you need to expect tough fishing. Any capture is a result.

Edit: March lol

IMO the seasons have changed in the last 10 years. For me, November and December offer a good chance of a bite while March is still winter angling. April is when it really starts to happen unless the venue is very, very shallow and temps are through the roof.

I now consider a March capture to be a winter fish.

We used to have a regular early April socials with the old members off here yonny , the last two may as well of been January, ice in the margins & biting north easterly winds . It's definitely shifted the last decade

I remember out catch up last year, it was bitterly cold and around this time.

I've booked my first proper trip out this year for a few weeks time but will cancel the holiday if it doesn't look right weather wise.

You have picked up on what I was going to say BC ..... if you know there in the stretch go for it . If your still to do a spotting reccy in the warmer months then your need a big dose of luck .

If nothing else treat it as a start of a baiting campaign & stick a bit in when you leave, will give you a starting point for your next visit.

Think everywhere is hit and miss, with peaks and troughs in the temps. If you know that they are in that stretch, then , why not try?

Agreed mate, any thing done now is going towards "kick off" time....... Unless lady luck is smiling on you.

Over the years I've seen one or two come out and it's quite a well known stretch for catching them. I'll go down and give it a go, I'm taking the bivvy and bedchair, so if I don't catch at least I'll get some rest lol. I went down once the other week and done a bit of prebaiting with maize and boilies but because it's deep I can't see if they've eaten it or not. Anyway thanks for the advice I'll let you know how it goes

Just a quick question for you lads, the stretch of canal I'm fishing Saturday is roughly 12ft deep right through the middle and shallows up to about 8ft in the margins. Is it worth fishing for carp or will it still be too cold??

As the water is usually moving canals and rivers could well be the best shot of a fish or two.

I seem to have more time on my hands than expected, so I think from Sunday I will be having a few days on the bank.

Like others I have done better in December than I do in March, although for some reason on The Lagoons and Brackens I seem to find the fish start showing in May rather than April, probably average depth of the waters. On Brackens though it may be I can find carp in the Aquarium if the water is clear.

I call it the Aquarium, it is a gap between two swims in the trees, unfishable, no way to cast to it, too snaggy, and is the perfect place to see if the fish like your bait...

About 7 or 8 years ago, coops and I did a 4 day stint on horseshoe during the first week in march. We were in shorts and t shirts for the most of it!!!! Had a few fish as well. 3 years ago, Andy, guy and myself fished this week, hosreshoe froze over on us!!!!

Fishing will be slow but all my big bars of soap have come in march/april time if im on a water that allows 3 rods with a decent head of them my 3rd rod is always fished with a 10mm frutti tutti bottom bait cast away from my carpy spots normally bags me a couple stops a blank and tests out my rig.

Tench anglers on Nazeing can catch as many carp as tench, and carp anglers as many tench!

In fact last years largest carp fell to a tench angler, and some jammy carp angler landed the largest tench in July from a spot known for carp.

Locally I tend to specialise specifically for tench, one float, one on the lead, and I do start tench fishing around the 1st June, keeping reasonably close to the traditional start of the season.

Years ago i use to fish a liite farmers drainage pond in rainham about half an acre in size had no carp in the pond but some really nice tinkers average around 2lb ... early mornings was bite time just as the sun came up and i would normally have 3 or 4 out.

On one visit i got snagged on summin and it happened a few times this was around june time and the pond weed was just starting to hit the surface so one afternoon i took my weed rake tied to abit of rope with me and decided to see if i could clear the snag.

I pulled 2 deck chairs out that must of recently been dumped in there as i never had a problem before also while i was there i raked a line about 3ft wide and 6/7ft long and cleared all the weed then baited with 2 cans of corn and was going to fish the next morning.

Now the biggest tinker i had up untill this point was a tad under 4 pound and as stated 3 to 4 in a 2/3 hour morning session and i had fished the pond for a good 6 months.

I arrived at the pond the next day to find the patch looking like a jacuzzi and what followed was 18 tench 4 of wich went over the 6lb mark in 2 hours the biggest of thoes was 6lb 12 ... every fish was fin perfect and deep green a red letter day for sure and i enjoyed every minit of it ... but all good things come to an end as soon as the sun got to that point in the sky it was like flicking a switch and they dissapeared.

I can no longer gain acess to the pond as i think the farmer has sold the land and houses are bein built nearby i think they might of even filled it in.

Well, I'm sorting the gear out for a day tomorrow.

Someone I have known for 20odd years has a set of lakes at Bromeswell, which strangely another of my mates has been fishing since he got back into freshwater fishing.

I've never been there before, so it's an exploration trip, and nicely Al has offered to pay as he knows how things are at the moment, and I had sorted him a few bits out when I was at the pet and country store.
