dried mealworms

gagnaccarp

Im thinking of a new bait for margin fishing next year, a £1 gets you a 100 g bag of dried mealworms (produced for birds ) ,which can be soaked in various stinky things to rehydrate ,

has anyone tried this ,the oil content is  28% while protein is 52 %

I tried to "rehydrate" some once by soaking and boiling just didn't work for me , but I did like the idea of using them . Hopefully you will have better luck than me

did read somewhere that you can rehydrate them, had a hand full soaking in hemp juice for over a week but all they did was float lol.

they get used to bulk out maggots in groundbait now.

Mealworms float, the best use for them is to mix them in with your groundbait, and pour boiling water over the top. The mealworms ŵill then break up the balls as they head to the surface.

They can be ground and crushed and added to boilie mixes, or groundbait mixes for the same reason

At £10 per kilo, I feel there are better alternatives: dead maggots, mind you I've never weighed them so I'm not sure what a per kilo cost would be. I freeze them in smallish bags (1/3 of a pint(ish)), you can add any additives to the bag*, put the clean maggots in and shake  - tie it up and place in the freezer for two or three days minimum; no need to re-hydrate.

*just enough to coat them otherwise it can get messy

I would love to have a local stockist of maggots in france where I am , Brive , a 2 hour round trip is my nearest . my local tackle shops just have plastic cartons with a handful of maggots !

I have thought of breeding my own but im not so keen on the smell though,

I see your dilemma.

If you use them a lot and can't get to a place to buy them, try breeding your own gagnaccarp, unless you want huge volumes it's very simple, just do it as far away from the house as you can!

Wish I was "Isolated" out in Brive like you mate...

Couple of tins of cheap dog/cat food about 3/4 full, punched with holes and hung up under some kind of cover, with a tray of sawdust or something similar underneath. Once the maggots are "Full" they will drop into the tray and you can collect and riddle them.

Used to do this and hang them from trees over the local river to get a swim full of fish with zero effort!
