Andy Hull
Hi all, I have rolled some home made boiles a few days ago but when rolling they get a hole in the middle (looks a bit like a doughnut) and no matter how thick i make the sausage (hand rolling) it doesnt seem to make a diference. I am using a 14mm Gardener long table by the way! Any ideas what im doing wrong? Andy
newmarket
Andy , ive never ever heard of this problem before What on earth are you doing ? Talk me through it
Andy Hull
Hi newmarket, I get my paste to the correct consistency (i usually make 1 or 2 egg mixes) then pinch some off the main block and roll it to apoximately the correct thickness sausage. Then i lay it on the table and press down on the sausage whilst rolling forward. I then roll the table backwards and forwards a few times to create the ball and then roll them off onto the awaiting tray. I would sy that on at least 50% of them end up with a hole in the middle where it hasn't bound together and it looks like a minni doughnut but a bit more spherical! If i then hand roll the boilie in my hand it binds nicely and becomes a nice round (almost) perfect 14mm boilie. Andy
newmarket
Those Gardner rolling tables are marvellous imo , i myself have the 22/24 mm and the 8/10mm particle sizes . It sounds to me that the consistency of the paste isnt quite right . Maybe adding a little oil to the mix may improve matters . Im no science buff but it sounds as if you might have air in your mix/paste and the air pocket bursts outwards when you put pressure on with the rolling table . When i have rolling problems i find a little salmon oil/walnut oil depending on the time of year sorts it out ? Having said that , i roll a lot of my baits by hand or deliberatley using the wrong size table in order to make lots of different shaped and sized baits , dumbells , pillows , shapes etc to confuse the fish . Takes longer of course but i reckon its worth it Edited October 22, 2014 by newmarket

emmcee
That should NEVER be considered a problem it is if the roll aint big enough to take it
newmarket
it is if the roll aint big enough to take it No need to coat it in flour to give you a clue then ? cyborx
cyborx
it is if the roll aint big enough to take it you just get someone to nibble gently at it till it fits
dalthegooner
Get a tube of flexible filler (NOT mastic ). Cut the nozzle. Using a skewer through the nozzle end push out the plug in the tube of filler. Get a set of Gardner sausage gun nozzles and a sausage gun collar. Get a mastic gun. Put the correct nozzle on the empty filler tube. Fill the filler tube with boilie mix. Put the plug back in the sausage gun. Put the sausage gun in the mastic gun and use that to squeeze out the boilie sausage (All air will be pushed out of the mix and you'll get a perfect sausage) Roll boilies as normal with your sausage gun. The above shouldn't cost any more than £15. Well worth it in my opinion welder and salokcinnodrog
welder
May I suggest that the above reply is as comprehensive as anyone could hope for? Ian
Grasshopper820
Hi, holes in boilies is due to sausage being too large , forming rugby ball shapes and inevitably forming doughnuts when rolled over a few times , CC Moore website has a good video on rolling boilies Ade
deags7
Diameter of your sausage is too big. Hand rolling will be very difficult to maintain a constant sausage diameter. Cheapest place to get a good sausage gun is a local timber/flooring suppler. They are used for dispensing glue out of a foil tube. Found one local £17.99. B.O.F.
Just use one of these:- http://www.anglingdirect.co.uk/store/gardner-standard-sausage-gun?gclid=CMvfqPS_1cECFQQOwwodczMARQ Remembering to cut the nozzle a couple of mm smaller than your bait roller table to allow for the expansion of the mix after it is extruded. Note, if you wish to make "dumbell " shapes, cut a nozzle 4mm smaller than your roller table size. BOF
Andy Hull
Thanks for all the responces guys. I think im going to bite the bullet and buy a bait gun then that should sort my sausage problem! Andy newmarket
emmcee
youve still got to cut the nozzle the right size. the ready formed nozzles are ok but some mixes expand as they come out the nozzle etc
newmarket
I deliberatley roll my sausages by hand . Its a bit messier but im usually in a right state by then anyway but im guaranteed lots of different sized dumbbells & pillows which the Carp love Edited November 11, 2014 by newmarket
B.O.F.
Hand rolling is ok if you are only making small quantities, but if like me you are into baiting up with boilies as well as using them for hook baits then its a painfully slow method of bait making. I generally work at 1 kg an hour if I am making smallish baits. That's from breaking the eggs to finishing the washing up after. So obviously if I was to continue, the second and third kilo are done much faster than doing one kilo at a time. But my speed, or lack of it, pales into nothing compared with my pal "Elmo" who really cracks on, doing around 4 - 5kg per hour. However he is not maybe as tidy as I have to be with "Her Indoors" grumbling over my shoulder as I wash everything down.
B.O.F.
Just a thought, have a look on Ebay for Bait Making. I did and came up with a deal for a Qdos bait gun and roller table together for around £15 + p&p that may help you get going. Just remember to trim the nozzle on the bait gun back in very small stages, trying each one on the roller table till you get to the right diameter. B.O.F.
