darbs
Question. Has anyone really noticed any difference from using a bivvy with rear vents and one without? If I were to consider modifying my bivvy to have vents at the back, would I be best to get vents in the over-wrap too or just on the usual skin? salokcinnodrog
Welcome to the forum. I'll give my take on this, as someone who has a feeling that hype and fashion may be part of the need for air vents. In summer your bivvy will get hot if the sun is shining on it, and vents in theory should allow it to cool down, but only if there is any airflow or draught going from door to vent or vice versa, same as opening a window does not necessarily make your house cooler in the summer, in fact opening the window, may actually increase the temperature inside. In winter the vents should in theory help prevent condensation, again, air flow, but at the same time, allow a bit of heat OUT. So are Vents fashion or a need? chillfactor
Rear Vents make a huge difference in the hot weather don't let anyone tell you any different .
grangemilky
my brolly has flaps on the back, and i can honestly say i have never even unstuck the Velcro. Never found a need.
dalthegooner
I've never used the rear vents on the winter wrap, but opening the rear vents on the bivvy before putting the winter wrap on definitely reduces condensation by a massive amount (I've experimented with open and closed to prove this). They also help keep it a little cooler in the summer months. They work better if there is a breeze, but they do reduce the temperature no matter what. kevtaylor
Don't think fad comes into it, obvious benefit and improvement. Is that just dismissive comments from the jealous folk \\ Since getting my brolley system with vents all my mates are buying the same shelter, after stating that their conventional shelters were unbearable at times this summer. welder
I have no option but to use vents. My JRC STi twinskin has huge mesh areas in the roof and rear wall of the "inner" part so, even when fully set up with the outer wrap, I have the benefit of ventilation. I've never experienced any condensation and as I never, ever zip up (down!) the doors I always have air movement within. Once or twice in high summer it has been uncomfortably warm during full sunshine, particularly in France, but I just stay out until the evening calls. marty_h
Summer time when my eldest comes for a week session on the lake I take my 2 Man Nashdouble top extreme and pulling the front down and opening the rear vent definatly cools things down a lot. Same as my Armo open all the vents and its cooler anyone who says vents dont make any difference I cant understand why not have always done so withe me
newmarket
Agreeing with ian here . The sti twinskin has massive vents built into the "inner" part so i dont really get a choice
liamclose
I do think vents make it cooler when its hot but why would you be sitting in a bivvy when its hot. If its that warm u need vents then you better off stalking but so many anglers are more campers than carpers these days i guess vents are esensial afta all there 10kilo of munger out there and the chod carnt fail.
