scoobydan_84
Hi all looking at getting a new set of reels after xmas. Looking at getting big pits this time! Been looking at old threads on here and reviews etc but their are so many to look at. Anyway i dont want to be spending mega money but also dont want to be buying cheap and end up buging twice.i will be going to local tackle shop to have a look and a play also. So what would you guys recomend i look at?
matt859
How often do you fish on large open venues that require a long chuck? Is it really worth getting big pit reels if you only fish large venues once or twice a year? However if you do fish a big venue then go for a nice affordable pair of Okumas

scoobydan_84
Probably looking at spending up to £70 a reel. Well thats the thing, i dont fish where i need them at the min but am looking at other places to fish. Was looking at the shimano 10000 st is it? but i want a reel with front drag, played with a mates shimano and couldnt get on with drag being at the back. Iv got a set of okuma ipb 350s now but keep getting trouble with them.
blythy
personally on that budget i would have to say shimano beastmaster xta's

woodchester17
try the shimano big pit baitrunners. i got a set of the originals and they are bullet proof. my mate ian "mad dog" breach has a set and hes given his a super battering all over europe and he cant break them. you can prob pick them up new for just over a ton now. salokcinnodrog
What about something simple like Shimano Aerlex 8000's? I've used them for a few years, fishing, spod and marker, and they really are bulletproof. Front drag, and an easy reach anti-reverse switch on the back of the reel, money is close to your budget as well. I now have a set of 10000 baitrunners, and the casting distance is nowhere near as good as the Aerlex's, unless I fine down the line diameter from 15lb 0.35mm to 10lb 0.28mm. phippers84
I have a pair of wychwood riot 75s which I bought 6 years ago for £65 each and i still use them to this day despite buying a set of Diawa Windcast z which I use on my spod and marker rods. Both reels are absolutely great and is very little difference in casting performance and how they feel to play fish with. I think you can only get the wychwood riots online now at around £55 - £60 but I would highly recommend them as an excellent "budget" reel. jules007
I have been using mitchell Avorunner 7500 pit reels for about 3 seasons, i have to say i really like them, huge line capacity, loads of bearings and super smooth, but last time i used them i found the finish is going iffy, though in fairness they have been out in all weathers, if i decide to replace them i will try and get the same, but try to look after them this time
scoobydan_84
Thanks for replys. Been looking at the dawia crosscast s and like the look of it.also seen a mitchell avo spod reel on erics which looks ok but will it stand up to the test of time?? Also like the shimanos mentioned.so i think im going to go into tackle shop and have a feel and a play now i have narrowed the options down a bit. Also going to the big one end of feb so is it worth holding out untill then and try to get a better deal?

I usually attend on the last day and as the afternnoon draws on see lots of items discounted. They don't want to take stuff home with them! I was lucky to get a trade deal on the CCast X otherwise it would have been the S all the way for the money, pure and simple class!

hnv
If you can find them (they may be discontinued now) Daiwa Emblem S 5000T's. A great big pit real for less than £50 each. You may not get the the smoothness or line-lay of a much more expensive model but they are bullet proof with an excellent clutch. Try some of the larger tackle shops with big store cupboards like Leslies, Tackle box etc. They may still have some gathering dust at the back. hnv
P.S. in the years since I bought some they have gone up in price by a tenner! Surely a mark of quality... or is that antiques?

Im swaying towards the crosscast s and if i can get a good deal at the show mayb the windcast s or x although mayb a bit out of my price range. I have also been offered a set of 3 shimano big pit longcasts for £210,the older style i think in good nick, but i dont know history of them and would really like a new set. See if he'll take £200 and bite his hand off! The old big pit baitrunner LC's were another class of reel to the emblems. Get 'em serviced by shimano and they'll be like new. Guest keenook
Yes I think he did, they still have an awesome possitive feel, and a superb clutch, that's how I fish with them, set like a baitrunner, the clicking of the clutch is pure magic to the ears! Sorry off topic
