Double Takes

Hey All,

I've had a quick search for this, but not found anything fruitful. So; genuine question. How do you guys that have had them deal with having a double take (that is two runs on two rods at the same time)?

Reason I ask is that I've never been (un)fortunate enough to have this occur in my seven odd years of targeting carp. But it just occurred to me the other day that I would have no idea what to do if it did happen. I'd be worried about it taking out other peoples lines, or stripping all of the line from the reel whilst you play the other fish...

Do you have a feel of both and see which is the better feeling fish and play that one in first?

Shout for help?

Net one, then bring in the other fish and get them both in the one net?

Do you tighten the free spool up so that the other fish stays on, but can't strip a great deal of line from the reel whilst you deal with the original fish?

never had it happen either in 15 years of carp fishing. I would reel one in, unhook it and hope for the best on the other rod. Doing everything right on one rod is better than doing things wrong on both.

Also if there is anyone close by i would be willing to give them a shout for some help. Fish safety comes first rather than the satisfaction of catching both myself.

Ive had two on at once and I did the same as posted above I simply flipped the bail arm over on the second rod and the alarm just stopped, I landed the first fish and my mate had just turned up with his net so I picked up the second one expecting to wind in an empty rig and there was a carp on which must have just been sitting on the bottom where it was hooked. I think it must have been confused because there was no pull or resistance from the line (me on the other end of the rod) and it just sat there. spooky....

I had this happen in france, first rod went, and as i lifted and felt the weight of the fish the second one went. First one swam from one side of the lake to the other and threw the hook as it entered the snags and the second rod which was about 2 rods lenghts off a really bad snaggy area just sat there, moved ever so slightly but didnt run, pick up the rod, wond down and then the fish started its best efforts for freedom.

Worst part about the whole thing was, i was the only person on the lake, my phone was in the back of the bivvie and by the time i could ring the owner the first fish had me off in the snags(trying to play a fish from inside your bivvie isnt an easy task!), but the upside of the whole thing was that the second fish was my biggest of the week, 30lb common.

If i wasnt fishing up against snags i would open the bail arm and let it do what it wants, if its weedy lake then id just leave it on the rest, and tighten the clutch a bit. In reality youll be flappin about like loon!

This has never happened to me - although a few weeks back I lost a fish on my left rod at about 3am. I swung in my rig to inspect my hook/bait and my right rod rattled off!!!!! If I hadn't lost the fish I would have certainly been playing two. I'm sure the first fish felt bigger, although that's prpbably just my mind playing tricks on me!

Hi Phil, Yes I have have had a take, and whilst playing that Carp the other rod has rattled off, both were landed in the same net with no drama as the second take was out in open water allbe it at night, and similar to Phil 90781 I have landed a Carp and swung that rig back out in the margin so it was out off the way whilst sorting out a Carp still in the net and the same rod has ratled off! :P

I've only ever had it once while pike fishing, but was lucky enough to be fishing with a mate. I struck the 1st one, and as I was playing it the other rod went, so Dave who was with me hit that, and after the 1st fish was netted handed me the rod back.

I think that both fish were around the 10lbs mark, one had a tag on its fin, but any more than that I can't remember.

Ive had quite a few double takes, i tend to get the first fish in as quickly as possible then play the next if its still on.

Snag fishing would be different, actually thats a good question,

What would you do if you had two rods fishing to snags and they both went off?

I wouldn't have two rods on the same snag anyway, one to the snag and one in open water, i suppose even if i was playing the fish in open water and the snag rod rawed off i would leave the first to deal with the fish by the snags.

More times than not you'll be playing one as the other raws off so your already committed to the first.

Not an ideal situation but the fish by the snag would have more of a chance of getting tethered.

Just my opinion :)
