mrdevon
Well it didn't go exactly to plan for me the missus was back in hospital again Thursday night and there til late Friday and then the weather was rotten on the Saturday but I woke about about half 4-5'ish Sunday, sat bolt up right and looked out the window to glorious sunshine so excitedly woke her seeing if she fancied it but I was met with a grumble and sent on a reccy to see how busy it was and with in minutes I was dressed and out the door cycling like a kid on his way to the sweet shop with his pocket money. All was perfect and every swim was free and apart from the fast current it was dead calm not a ripple in sight just the odd fish topping. So home I scurried and gave her the good news which I'm sure she was hoping for the really busy answer but like a good sport she woke, filled her head with pain killers and antibiotics and woke the kids while I fannied about getting all the gear sorted which with her and the kids goes from one small bag to a barrow load and some Anyhow we finally set up and got fishing one a swims I'd been prebaiting but with the amount of rain and heavy flow wasn't holding out much hope for it being very productive. I was a little pee'd off to find several of the over hanging trees that I'd caught from numerous times on the non-fishing garden side had all been cut down by the residents leaving a bare semi featureless marginal area Anyhow the day went uneventful with the only thing caught being a nice suntan which I was surprised at, the stark contrast in weather from the Saturday but then the rain soon kicked in and in the bivvy we were stuck waiting for that break to so we could make a move home but it never came and before we knew it it was 2am and still light like it was about 10pm so decided to stay til this morning and pack up then We woke to more glorious sunshine and several large carp leaping out and rolling then all her plans of packing up are out the window and muggings here is off getting them supplies for the day, cleaned up then off to work while she's out fishing. How fair is that??? Can't I be a stay at home mum/housewife?
cobleyn
Well the Trent is still up. But I've cast a line. 6oz leads are holding bottom for around 15 mins before the weed and gunk builds up on the line and knocks them down the river. ...but I've had a 5lb chub on a couple of really gunky, stinky 20mm's....so that's my season kicked off. Guest Anonymous
never caught a chub mate? you wanna get down the river and get a few, great fighting fish in the right flow and pretty fat gobbed fish too! 5lb+ is a good chub cob
carefulcarping
Only ever fished a river once. My mate took me and another mate last year for 48 hours to the Avon in evesham where he had a 13lb barbel amongst other smaller barbel and some chub. Needless to say when we all went, we blanked. Still trying to get to grips with fishing lakes, let alone rivers that have a current with weed in
Guest Anonymous
are bad times on the blank! Cant recomend river fishing enough mate, has improved my carp fishing leaps and bounds, due to chasing barbel and chub i now keep my rigs alot more simple on the carp front and have now learnt to use hooklinks that are longer than i would before hand. Dont get me wrong, after a few river sessions you want to go carping again just to chill out and not have to work as hard as you do on a river for your fish. On a river if i dont have an inclination of a fish in 45 mins im moving swims and searching the fish out, whereas when your carp fishing if you get your location right you know there's fish in font of you. carefulcarping
Blanking is hard work no matter where your fishing. But at the moment i like to concentrate on one thing before i get all confused with something else although there are some lovely stretches of river around here. I know you have to work alot harder on a river, another reason i havn't really tried it
rossmc
I had planned to go down for midnight but that all fell through, typical River Wear conditions, it lashed it down for a few days before and the river was unfishable for my tackle, my grandarrs 13ft match rod would have been doubled over just on the rest! So as i write now, the river has dropped, still has a little colour and the suns shining with cloud cover rolling in and out... why am i sat here youre screaming? I have 9 essays to hand in for friday to finish college and wish i hadnt left them this long. People say you learn from your mistakes but i never do. The good thing about this is that after all the essays are done and handed in, im taking my 12 year old computer into the yard and its getting a axe straight through it! mouse freezes up every 15 minutes which results in mouse being unplugged and plugged back in, i have to type slow or some letters wont apear... the list goes on! Someone catch a barbel for me this week! please
cobleyn
Ross- just to check- You do know hitting it with an axe doesn't fix it. Hopefully have a picture of a Barbel to put up soon.
rossmc
It fixes my stress levels no end though! Ive been out the house once in 4 days to pick the lady up from town and thats it, im working in a room thats 6 x 12 ft, Little bit like a prison cell, writing about how to save trees from pathogens etc when all i wanna do is cut them down and see which one makes the loudest noise! SAVE ME!!!!![/u][/b]
salokcinnodrog
I spent the Friday night from midnight to 5am down on the river after carp, very little sleep after a few of the large carp that I know inhabit the area, but I have to do "sneakies" as it is a well known area. Since then I have managed a couple of days further up the river catching chub all on dog biscuits. 4 chub in 2 days for myself, and Big Dave managed his 1st ever dog biscuit chub today with an awkward cast under some overhanging trees for a 2 1/2lb chub to a "kacke cast that mate" comment. I've also managed to lose a few hooklinks and a couple of fish, and a bite off when I wasn't expecting a take under my feet Dave had his nightmare session yesterday doing the same
carefulcarping
Mine isn't going quite to plan either. Opened Friday night. About 15 carp came out. They realized the anglers are back and now it's impossible to catch them. Had 1 bream so far, hoping tonight produces, if not there is always next time. cobleyn
Had a good night bit bashing tonight...a good few roach, chub and dace coming to maggot. Then a mid double pike started to smash my keep net up -properly launching itself. Never seen a pike that aggressive.
rossmc
Well i escaped prision for an hour to walk to river to see if babs was still at home, sure enough 3 still sat next to the same weed raft in about 2 foot of water, clear as day. What i dont understand is why people go fishing on the river, dont take time to look, it would taken all of 30 seconds to spot them from the road side, but set up further down in the really slow deep water just because theres a new tree gone over on the far bank. Idiots. out of all 6 anglers, not one had caught, if only they walked 40 yrds upstream to the wear (i mean come on lads, theres a wear there for christ sakes, it screams barbel for this time of year!!!!!) And to add insult to injury, i just happened to find another 2 essays that need doing! ive gone through 1 and 1/2 jars of coffee in 2 days, look like a vampire and the lass wants the bathroom ripping out and a new one fitting. {insert every swear word known to man beast etc here}
