As a soon to be Aussie carper I was hoping you guys might have a few

Nuggets of advice on where I might get my net wet around The Gold Coast/Brisbane.

Any other info on baits and rigs you might have had success with Down Under.

Cheers Guys and tight lines!

Hello mate,

Carp are classed as a noxious species in Queensland and as such there are regulations about not releasing them if they are caught here's a link to the DPI regs http://www.dpi.qld.gov.au/28_14582.html

Also a lot of Brisbane has seen some flooding recently so the fishing may well be adversely affected.

If you are emigrating to Australia then the best advice is bring all of your gear because of its specialized nature you can get very little over here. AQIS are very strict on what you can bring in so you can't bring bait, and I would be wary of bringing nets, unhooking mats/slings that have been used though you should be ok bringing new ones in, strip all your line from your reels and bring new line too, basically be wary of bringing in anything that's been in contact with water because it will definitely get pulled up.

cheers,

Chris

Cheers for the reply Chris

Ta for the tips, I looked at the gov site and was a bit preturbed by it!

Dyou reckon new fake baits (still in sealed packaging) would get pulled by AQIS?

Dyou guys down there use Zig rigs or is it mainly bottom baits etc?

Saw the floods and a few of my mates in Brissy had to be moved to shelters

and I think by the time I get out there things will have calmed down a bit!

Cant wait to catch some Wild Virgins cos all the waters over here are gettin so pressured it's mad

Thanks again mate be lucky

You're welcome Jan,

I've imported fake baits like Frank Warwick tutti frutti fake sweetcorn and fake maize and yes they got pulled up by AQIS but they let them through - I would like to have seen the looks on their faces when they opened that package - I tend to use particle baits and don't bother much with boilies, maize is the one I've had the most success with though the biggest Carp I've caught fell to a surface bait, all the usual methods will work though I must confess I've not had much success with zig rigs.

cheers,

Chris

How do Chris

Do you fish rivers or lakes cos I'm thinkin that zigs might be more of

A still water tactic than river because in running water the bait would appear as if it's tethered and unnatural looking, though carp are inquisitive it could put them off.

Last year over here 75% of my catches fell to zigs even in the freezing cold weather we had in Jan/Feb.

With it being so hot down there do the carp spend alot of time cruising the surface and in the upper layers?

Cheers mate

Hello Jan,

I fish rivers and lakes I've tried a few types of zig rig in one particular lake with very clear water and could see the Carp approach but it always seemed to spook them for some reason perhaps it just doesn't look that natural in 9 metres of water.

I've never tried and probably wouldn't try a zig rig on the river I fish (Hawkesbury River) because its tidal and tends to pull through a fair bit when its its running up and down.

By English standards it doesn't get cold here at all especially not in Brisbane (Canberra can get chilly) there are no real defined seasons as you would know them - certainly not to me anyway - but I find the Carp are at their most active in what would be classed as our Aus spring, autumn and winter. At the height of summer they tend to be preoccupied with natural foods, plus it gets too hot to fish (for us poms) and the weed growth can make fishing nigh on impossible in some places.

cheers,

Chris

Hi I would say if you are shipping your gear over. I would personally bring your nets in secure rod tubes on the plane. When i sent my gear over 2 years or so both of my nets were lost for 3 months in a quaratine department and my fox landing pole was never found. Insure everything and iti9mised everything single expensive bit of equipment you have. As if your gear does go missing insurance companies can be really hard to get the money back off.

I would say you could make your own baits or source ingredients, good enough to attract carp over here or just use maize, cheap and simple.

Biggest problem over here is finding the bigger fish and good areas to fish on the rivers. As many rivers are super snaggy and need a boat to tackle them.

That said the carping is really un explored and there could be some really big carp out there. It just takes a lot more graft than english carping to find areas with better fish in.

On the subject of baits there is a group (NSWCARC) who are in the process of importing Berkley Carp baits such as boilies, pellets and particle mixes, there is also a fledgling custom boilie maker and specialist tackle supplier who has supplied me with a few kilo's of a HNV boilie which look and smell like the goods, I can't wait to get out there and try them out along with the new rods also supplied.

cheers,

Chris

G'day Jan,

As the boys have let you know, it will be a whole new kettle of fish for you when you arrive. Can't fault one piece of advice they have given you. Prepare your gear properly and you'll sail through AQIS, that may be the easiest part of your carp quest in Oz!

I have done a bit of scouting around Brissie and the Gold Coast and can point the way to a couple of spots. Mind you these were before the floods but hopefully the fish didn't get flung too far and wide. QLD is hard for regular angling opportunities and you may have to travel several hours west and/or south to get into better fishing.

There are big fish in Oz, but we don't give them name and they're not in overfished mud puddles, in fact you'd be hard pressed for anyone to tell you where they are at all but that's another story!! But we are a brotherhood of committed anglers and once we know you we will help when/how we can to get your bobbins swinging!!

Cheers,

Ben
