  1. Back from a few days fishing with mates at churn pool . Conditions were tough with easterly winds & heavy rain for the last couple of days .  Session didn't start well with losing a fish early on but did get off the mark at around midnight the first night , cracking mirror that my dodgy night shot did no justice to . Didn't weigh it but probably mid twenty.

Screenshot_20231017-003639_VideoPlayer.thumb.jpg.0b7be34c699c0ef41200f5ec735f2e1b.jpg I was fishing 3 different margin spots one on the far bank which produced the first lost fish ,  this fish came from the corner of the bay I was fishing & the 3rd was just off to my right by a bush .  Simple hair rigs & double tiger nut & fishing big sticks . Next bite came from the same spot & was a young fish.

Screenshot_20231017-163633_VideoPlayer.thumb.jpg.08ac01220227d89b5e5ce16d2f787e6d.jpg the rest of the day past bite less as did the night . Then 10ish the next day had a drop back bite from the corner again,  this one felt like a good one,  I had hooked a branch half way between me & the fish 3ft long & as it got closer realised there were zebra mussels on it right where my line was hooked up on it ,  managed to bring it in but needed two hands to free it without cutting it off on the mussels so had to put the rod down . Got it free & back playing the fish . So lucky not to of been cut off ! Eventually slipped the net under the fish & was rewarded with a pb mirror of 34 5 lb breaking my very old record by 2lb . 20231018_102231.thumb.jpg.16d9e8839cc0e7ff35740bfc640753ee.jpg

The final bit of action came from the bush to my right unfortunately lost this one in the weed . Great to get out & do some fishing  really enjoyed being back in the bivvy.

  2. What a cracking thing to have a go at mate . I wonder if a metal detector would of unearthed some bigger nuggets 😁

I've always wondered about the river that runs though my land 🤔

Not sure on that though as I try not to fish the obvious features, or even swims.

Taverham was a case in point; most anglers would fish to the islands, or big obvious gravel bars, and from the 'usual' swims. I used to prefer the swim to the right of the plateau swim which was the entrance to the backwater channel, and cast to a fallen tree trunk rather than the corner or gravel bar a little further up. On Cowtail point, most people aimed to the corner of the island, but my aiming point was left towards the lily pads, where a gravel bar had a gully across it.

Nick your just fishing the obvious spots in that swim lol .... fallen tree trunk / lillies/ gullies/  gravel bar /  back water channel /  sounds good to me where do we sign up 😁

Do you think that because I've recently bought a baitboat with excellent sonar that somehow you're better at casting and feature finding than me?

I'm as good as I've ever been in that regard yet now I have extra info available if I want it.

The question is can they catch you more fish and the answer is a firm YES, there was no casting to the spot I caught from at Ashmire so it's a bonus fish, could have been more as I lost a few, and it shows stuff manual casting can never show. I.e undercut drop offs, fish, branches, sunken boats etc  and the extra range, extra stealth, ability to go under overhangs.....

100 % I even said at the time ... that was definitely a fish I couldn't  of caught  , plus the other takes you had .

Most of my fishing these days is exclusive bookings with mates .... normally 4 of us . Its split 50/50 with 2 of us not using bait boats & 2 that do .  From my experience  & all the info gathered  between us over the past decade or so . A bait boat will only catch you more fish if you know what your doing in the first place .  & can be an awesome bit of kit .

If your a noddy your still be a noddy just with a bait boat 😁

Regarding certain comments about having more skills etc .... you could spin that around & say an angler with a bait boat & all the sonar etc & knows how to use it,  has developed more skills .

  5. Had a great few days .... absolute pleasure meeting you all . & big thanks again to elmo for organising it 👍

commonly has pretty much covered the fishing side of things .... did fancy my chances when the wind changed & I  moved,  but should think the otter in my swim  killed any chance of a carp .

Well that's what I'm telling my self 🙄

Still great to get out & meet new people 😎

Big congrats to lads that did manage a carp  👏

  6. 3 bites ....3 tench for me so far 🙈

Certainly not been giving them selves away. The most carp we've seen , unfortunately have been in a section of the lake only accessible by boat & none of us realised you had to bring your own to get to the swim .... kev was even online looking at buying one 😂

I've moved this morning , new warm  wind so moved right into the teeth of it into the corner its hacking into . . Certainly more confident now than I have been . Proper weedy though so presentation is tricky.  Fingers crossed 🤞

20k of boilies, £40 worth of rubber & plastic, £40 worth of grub, £30 worth of beer. All packed and ready for the social this weekend.

Shame some couldn't make it. Maybe next year????

Just heading out now to do a food shop mate... vans pretty much packed . Looking forward to meeting you in the morning &  a walk around the lake . With the shape of it , should make for an interesting draw & swim choice I reckon  . 👍

What puts me off some waters is this business of having to prebook a lake and swim prior to arrival, a local complex near me that I used to hold a season ticket does this and it put me right off. I want to be able to arrive at a venue, look around the available lakes and swims and choose a spot based on fish location, weather conditions, watercraft etc, not prebook a lake & swim in advance, it might be a carp desert when I get there!

100% mate ...never fished a venue that does this .

Sorry to hear that pal. Bivvies are silly money now.

I got my JRC 10 years ago £200 with rain/winter skin and ground sheet. It seems you need to spend 5 times that for anything half decent.

I may go second hand, but there's not a lot of choice for around £4-500.

The weather forecast looks OK now on my app. Bit of rain Friday afternoon and Sunday night.

I would if got another armo as the last one lasted 14 years including family camping .... but it was just after lock down & there was no stock anywhere . So ended up with  the Hq .

I've only got a 2 man. So, hopefully they're not too small.

A draw would seem the fairest way, but happy to go with whatever.

Hopefully a few days of this type of weather will get them feeding🤞

Depends on the 2man  though eh mate .

My old mk2 armo 2 man had a far smaller foot print than the new avid . The Avid isn't a patch on it either.

So I got a circular from the fishery manager.  Seems a few have been sending a bait boat well into the out of bounds nature reserve. Fair enough, bait boats are now banned from that end the reservoir. I don't have one so doesn't bother me.

The bailiff who is due to take over as the old boy is 80, has now decided he wants to do rig checks, as he's found someone using a 6oz lead. The rules are 3oz? I use a 4 & curved hooks. Again no curved hooks allowed.

So I'm going to have to conform until I think he's done checking my rigs.

He's mentioned a few do's & don't's to a mate. Which I think he's just making up as he goes along.

This bailiff is a bit of a busy body know it all & I'm concerned once he takes over the management, it won't be the same tranquil fishery.

Anyone else left a venue due to change of management?

Mate .... I  joined a sydi  years back  .... deep mere up in Shropshire so it was a good 2.5 hours away , but the fish were stunning . I absolutely loved zig fishing there, it went down to 30ft & 12ft zigs seem to work a treat  .  Before the renewal came around they announced zigs were to band . I just knew it would do my head in watching the birds hit the hatch knowing that a zig would produce but couldn't fish them .

So didn't rejoin.... real shame as I love the lake & the fish . FB_IMG_1517434805521.thumb.jpg.0b5faefc52827ff40fef8fab466e350f.jpg

Thanks, the fishing is that good mate I'm tempted to book friday/saturday/Sunday night as well, found an animal feeds supplier so can get some flaked maize if needed 👍👊

    Thanks mate 👍

I was under the impression it was fishing to see what it holds because they used the word "trial", but yeah this reservoir is owned by South West Lakes and they will only allow carp fishing for the removal of carp because they were illegally stocked (by carp anglers I assume, there's been some stories lol)

It's to improve the water to keep it as a trout fishery. They have refused to open it up permanently as a carp water 🫤

The fish caught are being used to stock other trust/club course fisheries that they own and the small stuff are being sold on for revenue for the trust as well.

I wasn't sure how I felt about it all at first, because you're removing them from their original water, but if it helps the other trust waters i fish I suppose I'm all for it really.

Also fishing here has been like a dream for me, always seen it on the maps but never been able to fish it, now being able to is just awesome 👌

I know the lake that mirror is going in so would be nice to try and catch it in a few years time 👍

Anyway I've had 18 fish so far, reeled in last night at midnight to get a couple hours solid sleep. Feeling it today, got the wind blowing in my face, rods are out and some more bait 👊

Thought something was going on mate .... enjoy 😎

  13. Nice session that mate .... could be an awesome carp venue in a few years 😎

Those fish were definitely stocked at some point , I wonder  what the long term plan is ?

Carp venue ? or growing fish to sell on & maybe letting a few anglers on to let them know how there doing .... certainly cheaper & less stress on the trout than netting .
