  1. When I first fished a big pit I set my stall out and fished at 40yds or less for 90% of my fishing, especially when seeing most anglers casting as far as they could. I also concentrated on the bays on this particular lake as the fishing was comfortable for me and more into my style. Im not someone who likes to fish as far they can so I only ever launched baits to the horizon if that's where the fish were.

Don't get sucked into what you see everyone else doing.

And the obvious one is location, location, location.  Also Write down where you see them , the wind direction,  weather, the atmospheric pressure (in my opinion  and my findings were these factors play a bigger part on larger pits than smaller ones)all these will help you get  a picture of the fish are up to.

    Get well soon gents.

    Have u tested for Covid??

I know a few people say they have had it recently (confirmed with tests).

'6 week cold' is a term I hear a bit, but I've had it on and off for well over 6 weeks.

I wake up all full of snot, then around 3-5pm I start loosing my voice???

I tested positive on the 16th December and I'm still positive as of yesterday. Today is the first day I feel like I've turned the corner,  still very weak and full of a head cold though. Must admit I've not had the last 2 jabs but had the first 3.

had 18th booked off work for a quick cheeky day session so i could at least justify the stuff in the shed but like you floored and missed everything by staying in bed :( for me it was 3rd time round and this one left a nasty hangover feeling......

Yeah .I've had constant nausea for over a week now along with the usual symptoms,  body aches, fever, bad head and chest. Seems so much worse in the mornings for some reason.

Just can't catch a break, looking forward to a nice bit of early for me angling at a posh runs water and boom, tore my stomach lining leaving me with a nasty looking hernia, the only fix is a mesh patch which the NHS don’t do unless it becomes trapped in the stomach muscles cutting of the blood supply.

To say I'm gutted is a understated pun to say the least.

Merry Chrismas all and may all next years carp be special ones.

Know how you feel. I've had this week booked off work to have a long break only to test positive for covid last Friday. Its the first time I've had it and it's absolutely floored me. The way I feel I'll be pleased to be able to get up on Xmas day let alone enjoy it.

I saw this in NCB, and decided it is a topic for main discussion as not everyone (meaning me) regularly go into Non Carp Banter, so I moved it, leaving a link to its new position.

I've made the point that as anglers and as people, society as a whole, we are targeted with advertising and marketing of things we don't need, and fishing tackle of most disciplines is the same; products to 'make life easier', that frequently take away personal innovation or make it that everyone is doing the same.

Fishing can be cheap and simple, a hook attached to the line with enough weight to get it where we need to cast to, simple barbel, chub and roach fishing, and either a float or rod tip to indicate a take. That is as simple as it gets, BUT, you can't watch a float or rod tip constantly for hours or days at a time.

This brings us to our need for bite indication, a buzzer or audible alarm.

Tackle has developed, rods that could only cast 50yards back in the 1960's have been superceded by rods that will cast hundreds of metres, and obviously the cost has increased.

Reels that could only hold 200metres of line, more modern gears and the baitrunner, or Bite and Run.

In alternative disciplines from carp fishing, sea fishing may work out 'cheaper', possibly because some fish may be saving us food money, as well as being leisure, although I admit lug and rag is expensive unless you dig it yourself.

In terms of waters, many are overpriced; clubs, day ticket even syndicate waters. I can't justify £25 per night to fish a day ticket lake, nor can I justify £235 for the local club (including night ticket) when my syndicate is £500.

There's more to say, but I'll save a few thoughts for further discussion...

    Totally agree with all this.

As i predominantly sea fish now I can confirm it is a cheaper form of our hobby. Yes you can buy a £500 rod and £500 reel but you can also get a rod and reel combo for £30 and catch fish with it. The hooks are on average £2-£3 a pack,  put those hooks in a fox, korda, gardener, nash etc packet and they are £5 - £6 a packet. Yes lugworm and ragworm are expensive but you can also pop into your local supermarket and pick up a whole mackerel or pack of sardines for little more than a pound and catch fish and as you rightly say , fish that you can eat.

    Hi guys

I'm very much a novice when it comes to carp fishing and I'm looking for some advice on carp fishing in the autumn and winter. I'm hoping to head on to my favorite day ticket lake in the next week and will hopefully be fishing through out the winter months also. My approach so far has been to fish solid PVA bags with an inline lead and a short hook link usually fishing with a mix of pellets in the bag a 14mm black crab and squid bollie. I usually fish to the lake features such as islands or trees by the margins. Just wondering how you guys would approach winter fishing what bait and rigs would you guys use and how and what do you use as feed and how much is appropriate in winter times. Also what time of year would you start looking for deeper water and what's the best approach for fishing in deeper waters?

Is your current approach working, if it  Is then I wouldn't change anything.

Amount of feed is individual to every lake (number of fish, pest fish, birdlife etc) and to every angler. Some anglers will use high attract singles or just stringers, bags and some might apply plenty of prebait and to try and trigger a feeding response.

Try and find out about previous wintrers on your chosen lake, what was caught and from where etc. Might be a certain swim or area that do the fish etc.

  7. Big thumbs-up for a couple of Nicks high attract flavours.

Tutti and black pepper (though I used to use solar esterblend 12, very similar to tutti) , excellent combo. Green zing (once again similar to tutti) was my go to winter high attract flavour used as a single or a handful of freebies at most. With the green zing, I'd make the hookbaits then once air dryed I'd put a couple of mil of flavour over the top and repeat the dose once a month.

Used milk b a bit and it will definitely compliment a creamy type flavour.  I mainly  used to use "milky b" which was made by rod Hutchinson if I remember rightly and it was a very good additive.

  8. I'd be rather careful with minamino brought from a bait supplier or tackle shop as the chances are their supply isnt stored correctly. I used to get it 5ltrs at a time straight  from the manufacturer. I'd then split it into 500ml bottles and put them in the freezer (the real stuff doesn't fully freeze but turns to slush puppy consistency, if yours freezes solid then its been cut). One bottle would be in the fridge and if I'd not used 500ml with in 2 weeks I'd bin it as it starts going off. Only found this out after my catch rate nose dived one season.  Basically I'd used all my minamino up and couldn't get any from the manufacturer so brought shop stuff, lots of blanks followed.  Told an old school angler I knew about this and the first thing he asked was where did I get my minamino from, straight away he said it was the shop brought stuff. He gave me some of his and hey presto started catching again.

Bit long winded but thought I'd explain my reasoning.

Have you had a look at the snugpak range ?
they now do a thermal waterproof jacket

admittedly it’s a bit on the expensive side though

Interested to read this. Got 3 sleeping bags and 2 coats in the Snugpak range and they are the best in my opinion.  If this waterproof coat keeps you as dry as their coats keep you warm then it's a winner.

Don’t do it unless you are confident in what you are doing

slightest error on your end could potentially end  in bad stuff.

    100% agree.

On my old lake 1 swim was made out of bounds due to one anglers inability to snag fish.  He had 3 rods all with baitrunners on and lost 3 fish in 2hrs whilst the head bailiff was opposite him.

If anyone decides to snag fish then they need to be 100% confident in their  gear and their ability to snag fish.

Waaaaaay to early, wife might not think so, but Christmas starts 1st December for me, finishes 1st January.

Totally agree. Yet its in your face in the shops as early as September . I'm sick of it by the time it actually comes round. It's only good as I have 2 weeks off work at Xmas.

I have watched some of his vids and they do seem to help tbh, next thing I need to learn to adjust is my hands I need to put one more finger the front side of the reel, I've enquired about going today, my boat isn't charged so I may just go manual for once and use the spod/leading rod to the max  😲

I've seen one of his recent videos and he recommends putting your whole hand in front of the reel. Feels weird but works

At least it is not just me, I can just about get them100yds with no shock leader maybe I Do need some bigger rods 😂

I watched a video of some bloke with £25 beach rod which was floppier than a floppy thing. I wouldn't grow runner beans up it let alone fish with it and he cast this rod 140yds on his first cast with it with ease. Its all about technique in my opinion.  I'm not a big caster or I wasn't should I say. Watch Terry Edmunds on YouTube,  he's done a few videos lately full of tips. So maybe work on your technique first as it might just save yourself a few hundred quid.

This is why one set of rods can’t do it all…

    but

if you can only have the one set do you go for a set that can cast to the moon or struggle to get over 80 yards??

im lucky and have a set for any situation I may encounter

if that means using a 6’ rod or a 13’ poker then so be it

I ended up using my 3.5lb tc's all the time simply because they could be fished at long range or under the rod tips. OK they won't be good in little poke holes but for everything else they were spot on.

  15. Ive had century rods, daiwa rods  but Harrison rods are all day long the best  for me for through action. I've got Harrison chimeras in 3lb tc and 3.5lb tc, a floater rod at 2.75tc and a 1.75tc barbel rod. My latest additions are 2 Harrison beach casters. The chimeras can put a lead 120yds plus and be just as forgiving fishing under your rod tips. That said its all about budget, preference etc. What one person finds excellent another might not, best going to a tackle shop and get the feel of a few rods before buying. Also what size lake are you fishing? Do you need to cast to the horizon or is it 60yds max etc, a lot to take into consideration.

Thanks mate I'll go for the 6000s 👍 I see on the pictures it's a plastic clip, can I change them to metal ones?

Not sure to be honest.  They are or certainly were round line clips and on the 5000's they are the shape of a shield and it causes line damage where as the round ones don't.

Can't remember the company but there's one that does custom spools for reals and they have metal line clips so maybe a Google search will find what you're after.

Fake corn being ingested full stop would be rarer than a unicorn on a moped, I've never lost any in 30 odd years, and I dont believe such a small item on it's own could block a fishes stomach. It's a big pig with fins.

I agree plastic baits are dangerous as ive pointed out, but for some baillif to come out with that nonsense is crazy, what like it ate a pile of fake corn utter nonsense, bloke needs a reality check.

Totally agree. When carp ingest something alien to them they just spit/blow it back out, even when it sucks in a mouthful of bait with sticks/small stones etc it blows the rubbish out and ingests the food.

As for the bailiff,  obviously making up a story to back up the reasoning behind banning the fake corn, he went very overboard with it but some will believe the utter nonsense 🤣.

If you go on the premier website, he’s put a notice on the home page, he’s still doing boilie making ingredients, but he’s stopped rolling bait. He says it’s time to retire.

@emmcee how did you find the superaminos? I guess as you used it for 12yrs, you rated it!

Excellent bait mate. It changed a few of my mates catches right around. They would average 2 or 3 fish a season from dinton when we were on there  but once they  got on this then they averaged 10 fish a season. Would say it was a big fish bait but I've caught big fish on all the baits I used from premier,  though my mates certainly caught better fish when using it. Use it with 100% confidence. A couple of my mates are still on it .  Luckily they put a big order in back in May so have some still.

Just a quick question really, always used hot water from the kettle to soak my particles before boiling.

I was reading something online about using mineral water instead of tap water.

    Any thoughts on this?

All my particles have now arrived and it's time to start preparing them, wondering if I should try mineral water instead 🤔 probably over thinking things again 🤣

Never heard of that or used mineral water when I used to do my particles. Maybe do a batch with and a batch without and compare catch results.

  20. A bait boat will help you put more fish on the bank for sure, simply because you can put a bait where it is impossible to cast to., but...

I fished a lake in the Colne valley many years ago  and one season a new angler arrived and I'd never met somebody who was so bad at casting i thought he was a proper noddy. I got chatting to him one day and asked  where he'd fished before etc and he rolled off a number of impressive catches and i thought i had misjudged him but at the end of our conversation he mentioned that the lakes he had been fishing were all bait boats. He said he hadn't cast a rod in 6 years.

So yes a bait boat is a huge help but if you rely on them then it may very well take away all your skills as an angler, which if your next lake didn't allow them you may well come unstuck.

On a side note, I've never used one and had ample opportunities to use them, especially in France but I personally see it as is not right. I'm not knocking anyone who does use them by the way, each to their own and fish how you want to fish and not how others want you to.

    Stopped rolling I thought

    still selling bits and mixes

I got an order for my mate off him  back in May and that was rolled although not by him. My mate will be gutted as he has no place/time to roll his own. I'll have to call Tony I guess and find out straight from the horses mouth as it were.
