  1. How big of carp are we talking in the Hawkesbury? I worked up near there ten years a go there was alot of small carp, but it defenitly had the potential to do bigger carp.
  2. A basic line aligner air rig is really all you need over here as the fish are fairly niave. I have found on some lakes using the hair and say 4 to 5 bits of maize3 and cork balls to pop up the bait can be to much. I was getting quite a few drop runs and fish just picking up the maize, i found when fishing closer in straight on the hook and to touch leger to be the best, or to float fish and not hit the first pull. Unitl the fish has got the bait down its gob a bit more.
  3. I use gardner spods for years they are really good and about the size of the ones shown in the photos. Hopefully i can send or photos OR PUT PHOTOS on soon. I use a full blood or a grinner knot for the attachment end to the spod we t it before pulling the knot tight as it can suffer from line burn or friction. For a leader and joining the two lines together a double grinner 3works well as a full blood even when wet on low line say 10lbs to 40lbs breaks when pulled. A braid would be good, but i cannot only say i have used them when luring for pike etc. I have just recently taken up spodding agai9n so i am in the same boat. A decent beach rod would suffice say 2 to 4 kilos casting weight you can pick these up pretty cheap from angling shopsn or online or even second hand shops like cashconverters. To cast majorv distance really balanced tackle is the be3st and a good long nose spooled reel withb the line mounted right up. I akm sure there is better articles on this forum than i can give advice. I will look in back issues of carp world to find some and type thm in. I have had problems with trieing to keep the spod on th4e surface when winding back. I had no problem in the past it just dives like a lure at the moment. I must admit if i can i use the catapult or fish the margins, but this is just not possible with some lakes and the fish at range. enough said for now
  4. 140 yards seems along way or as you said 140 metres. I used to cast 80 to 100 yards with a spod and found that a fare distance. I did not use a properly designed spod rod, but a 4 to 8lbs test curve beach rod a emblem 5500 reel 6 to 10 lbs mainline and a 40lbs pound leader. Over here i used spods on the river when i just cannot catapult out bait over 40yards say the only down size is the disturbance. Even feathering the cast down. I use mainly maize, but it is very light so i use also things like chickpeas, black eyed beans or any particle with a bit of wet weight to it. My question is can you get hemp in australia or something similar to it?
  5. Only just got my computer back up and running so hopefully i can put photos on now. I fished today and last week i had 9 fish today and lost a few, it was hard going for bites even considering it is really mild here tonight and the bit i fished in the dark, but it was -1.oc last night. I had 5 fish last week and it was really tough the fish are wising up a bit and are very spooky when you creep in close to them to stalk. I have not seen any big fish over 10lbs is big for me at the moment, i am a bit limited where i can get to on the waters i am fishing at the moment. So the carp can disappear easily into the sedges/reeds easily, i am baiting at least one day a week. But i am only stalking with one rod as it is a 20 minute walk to the ares i fish, so i have to cut the gear down. For now tight lines
  6. I think over here in Australia trying to change peoples minds about carp is going to be a hard a long up hill struggle. For a start there is not that much freshwater fishing as in the u.k and Europe and especially a round the area i live it is saltwater, beach, estuary fishing or nothing. I speak to some people a bout carping dependant on how the general conversation goes most people say they are a pest and to knock. Some just do not no the rules or laws regarding this species and others. I have only found one angler in favour of carp fishing and he has put me onto some potential good waters. I for one did not really fish for carp in the u.k for the last 10 years due to the change in the carp scsene and how many people fish waters nowadays and unfortunaly with that comes the idiots. I do love fishing and the carp fishing over here and really against fishing for small brim which are hammered here and fishing with everyone else there is no choice for me it is carping everytime. I have found my carp fever over here again, the only down side is you have to watch who is a round when the the fish fall back in and trying to find bigger carp 15lbs + is hard very hard i would say, but i will keep going on that one. I agree and look at it both as a fisherman and a enviromentalist, to many of any one species in any given habitat or enevironment will long term have a detrimental effect on other species. I can see as both a English fishereman come specialist, there is just to many carp in some waters to produce bigger carp and in those numbers they must have an affect on other species. I am all for promoting carp fishing and hopefully finding these mythical waters, which english anglers would visit. They would certainaly need fish over 40lbs or 50lbs nowadays to get people to fly all the way and put the time in as fish of this calibre are in Europe and Africa for example. I think the biggest challenge is carp are illegal to put back in many states and people grow up with the mentality that carp are all bad. A bit like pike and zander get blamed for back in the u.k. Or did i must add as pike are not as badly treated nowadays.
  7. fished today the afternoon off the main river, like a slow moving drain. I had over 30 bites touch legering and float fishing i missed quite a few when i felt the fish on my finger ant then it dropped it. I HAD 5 FISH COME A DRIFT STRAIGHT A way and had 1 come off at trhe net. I landed 10 fish to 7.8lbs so no0t to bad a day. I am going to stalk the fish even though not alot is showing at the moment accept for the odd floater i put on. for now tight lines
  8. Went down to the river 2 weeks a go the river wass still slightly up and more murky than normal. I fished further up stream than i have before. I baitrocketed maize across the river and fished a weed bed which was close to the far bank and a good row of snags and over hanging trees. A few fished topped over this rod but i idid not have a bite. I floated fished in 6 feet of water over maize and mashed bread there was afew carp a round, but they seemed to be after flies on the surface i had 2 times the float slightly dragged across the surface and then stopped. I just could not geta decent bite or feel any fish, when i flet down for the fish that moved the float. Hopefully going to go another stretch of river this wekend, weather assissted as i don't want to be under a brolly i fnd to be on the move is better at the moment to find the fish and get a few out. As most fish are not obvious to spot to stalk or lay down a carpet of bait to get them going. Am i the only one who struggles to find the fish this time of year?
  9. I fished sunday on the river the first time on this stretch for a month or so. I had 15 fish last time to 12lbs, but on sunday there was not much sho0wing and there was some water on it making it really brown in colour. I float fished the margins and never had a bite or hardly saw a fish. I managed 5 fish to 7lbs and missed a drop back, but really had to work for it. I had real problems getting bait out as maize ansd normal swetcorn does not go out well. I have got bait rockets over here for the initial baiting if i need to. What i was thinking of using waas feeders. Does any one know do they sale thekm over here or on a website in australia? If jnot i will have to make my own the open end feeder type i am on about. Defentily next time i fish i will go and have a good walk of the stretch first and try6 and find some carp as they seem to havew moveed, even though i was fishiong is perfect for this time of year near a marina with plenty of boats in not to fast flowing etc. I guess like back in u.k oncanals and rivers the fish can just suddenely move on mass. for now tight lines
  10. First time fishing for 3 weeks, i have baited an area off the main river for 2 days as there is quite alot of carp a round due to all the rain we have had and they are feeding on or what is in the muddy water. I fished at dusk and a few hours in just touch legering i had 7 carp to 6lbs including my first mirror carp from over here and lost 3 fish. Going to have to don the poloroids and get a float on and go and find the bigger fish or drop bait right on there noses. for now tight lines
  11. Defenitly a lot of carp around in some of the rivers and lakes. I guess the big thing is trieing to find or sort out the big carp over here. I would say round the clydebank morass area and other shallows in the spring would be worth a go, have to get the kayake to fish from and find the fish. I have not fished lake gutheridge for a while i was having bigger catches, but just could not get through to the bigger fish. Looking at the mitchell at the moment trieng to find or see better fish. Mainly stalking approach or really basic tactics. Fishing a back arm off a river at the moment, i defenitly think it has the potential of a twenty, just need to more time in.
  12. Fishing abit quite recently, due to work commitments (a real pain). I have been baiting 2 spots for the last 3 weeks about 4 kilos odd of maize and other baits. trying to get fish going on the top so i can see and sort the better fish out. Fish moving in within 5 minutes of baiting i went 2 weeks a go on a wet cold and very windy night for 3 hours i had 5 bites and had 4 carp to 7lbs. Which were more like chub i have never had carp so long and lean. There is alot of fish a round, but the water level has come up and so the bigger carp can explore more areas and the access to these areas is very limited due to water, vegeatation and snakes. I'll keep plugging away and let you know when i catch a big fish. Defentily some photos soon cannot download from this computer at the moment. As for line from the other debate, i use 15lbs berkley big game which can break a round the 20lbs mark. If the water is really open and no snags i might use 10lbs daiwa sensor. If it is a long distance i will use a leader on the 10lbs line. I am glad i am not the only mad carp fisherman out there as there is no one a round this region who fishes for stuff other than brim.
  13. There are some angling books over here on the way to canberra 2 weekends a go i found a 1989 mint copy of dick walkers drop me a line and a found a BB FIRST addition and a stephen Harper book the other day in beecworth whilst away. But defenitly they are hard to find, but can be found for a resonable prifce if the book shop owner has not learnt to use the internet yet.
  14. Found a decent area for carp to stalk them localish, so i am going to give that a go. Seen fish to mid doubles at least so watch this space. Do most people find that once winter is here the carp are really hard to spot as they dissappear further down in the depths? Where did you have that big catch from on the mitchell and there really is limited bank access?
  15. Did not end up going fishing sunday and monday due to work commitments. Went today to the river, landed 15 fish and lost 3. Had best day for a good while i only fished 6 hours. I had 3 fish over 7lbs, one of 9.1lbs and my first double this year at 12.1lbs. Most fish on the float over maize and bread and other particles. Going to try and put some photos on still having trouble with the link at the moment.
  16. I have been looking at the morass area for the last year or more. There is quite a lot of fish in there, but they are very long and lean. I have seen a few fish which would push 15lbs or more and some doubles. There is alot of different areas on there to look at, some of the fish are just to out of range. I was never sure if you could fish it, but the annual carp match amonth back they reported in the paper some one had taken carp from the morass. So they must have meant that area and i found carp the week after. I fished metung and the tambo, i am going to have go of this river during the week as there is just to many people on at weekends. I don't really know alot of the potential i have seen or heard reports of fish to mid doubles, but that was a while a go. I went up to canberra on the weekend, i had at lake burely griffin, a really nice lake. Brilliant clear sand areas to wade out and weeed a round the edge. with the polaroids i could see a goo way out. I spotted fish to doubles, i wish i had my rod thats all.
  17. A tough day in some respects, the fish were really finicky, due to fishing for them a bit and the cool down of the weather since the weekend maybe. Twitchy lifts on the swingers, resorted to touch legering. I had 17 carp to 6lbs and lost 5, with a few other runs missed. I fished to the island with 2 rods, very twitchy, drop backs on one rod. I had 3 fish on that. Nothing on boilie yet again. I have not fished the nicolson, i have been up it in the kayake, they sound like amazing fish and a really good catch. I wish the mitchell could throw up catches like that as it is at the end of my road. Hopefully get a day the weekend after next. Going to go the river as there are defenitly doubles in there as i have seen them. I have not used my pod over here yet or my 13ft 31/2 test curves imx's. No need at the moment.
  18. I'll sort some photos, i have not got a round to sorting out photos online yet. Only fish of 7lbs though and some of the lake. The top end looks good, but it is a good cast out and very weedy. I don't know much about the other lake as i have not fished it yet. There comes a guy round at night and he says someone has caught a forty from there, i am a bit sceptical about that. I think 20lbs would be a big fish. I have caught about 80 fish and lost quite a few and only 2 fish felt big boilie. I'll keep you posted going tomorrow for a day session, but very windy over here at the moment.
  19. Went to the river today had 6 fish to just under 8lbs and one lost so a good day on the leger. Some big fish a round so hopefully bigger fish to come.
  20. 26 fish today to 7lbs and 7 lost. 1 run on bolie nothging there. Hopefully a big fish soon, alot of fish a round and really windy day with some r4ain, maybe fishing nights is the answer.
  21. I had a better days carping today. Just had a quick trip 5 to 6 hours as no more time spare. I fished to the island and to some sedges closer in i had 20 runs or so. Hooked 18 fish and landed 12 to 7lbs or so, which my best number of carp from this water. It was cooler today and more overcast with a good wind blowing. There was quite a few carp a round. I lost a double figured fish on bolie off the island. My first run on bolie for a while i got the fish 2/3 of the way in then the hook pulled. Which was a gutter as runs of the better fish are few and far between at the moment. Have to try and get more time to fish more to track down one of these big carp. hOPEFULLY MY LUCK WILL change and the hook will stay in. Most carp on sweetcorn over maize on a simple rig.
  22. Been fishing twice over th4e last few weeks on the lake i have mentioned before. I fished after work until 12 fishing an island and sedge area i had 1 run only on boilie 2 hours in. The carp felt a good fish and put a good bend in the rod i could not move it off the island. Eventually after much of a fight the fish came away from the island and snagged me halfway out in a unseen snag. I wnet out in the kayake and found the line attached to a branch as well as a thick green leafed weed which has really sprung up these last few weeks with the summer weather. I managed to get over the fish and get it out, but with the branch it made it hard to play the fish i stopped it twice reaching the island on the final time of running out. I got it back near the net i would say it was a round doubles it was hard to tell from the glimpse i saw of the gold in the water. I could not get it near the net and then it run and the ord sprng back, the joys of carp fishing 2 and halfs month to kook one decent fish and it came a way. I was hoping for more runs, but i had nothing else for 10 hours. I went back last saturday and fished in the rain, i covered and area the last time i fished i had over 20 runs. I had to wait near dark thre was 15 fish over my baits but they were taking flies, there was some fish moving a round the sedges though and head and shouldering. I had, had 1 run on maize, but missed it, so i chnged to the float and worm. I had 3 or 4 bites, but just could not hit the fish and i spooked alot of fish. So i went back to normal sweetcorn on the hook and a light free running leger i had 5 fish in a row on dark up to 6lbs, very long and lean. I had to go early, but still it was good to catch even though all the fish i saw on the top and caught were still small. I have not seen a fish of double figures yet swimming a round, i hope there is some beytter fish in. I have been going a morass area to see if i can find any better fish to fish for the other night they had let the sluice gates open there was 100 carp or more stacked up like sardines underneath where the water was coming out and more than 200 in the bay. None were bigger than 7lbs, there is the odd fish over 10lbs i see occassionlly 3 or 4 bigger fish 12 to 15lbs o0r bigger the probl;em is they move a round alot are silt feeders and are always in the most inacessible areas where the snakes would be. Other than that not done much else on the fishing front. I am going to have a go at a river for big eels and carp. Do most rivers need a lot of prebaiting to get the carp going on the bottom on baits like maize etc? have people found.
  23. Went carp fishing on friday night after work until early morning. IT IS the first time i have fished this lake in 3 weeks due to work. I fished to some sedges which grow out from the island and out to the other end of the island. I fished boilie over a few boilies and maize i did not have a touch on this rod the other rod over about 4 kilos of maize i9 had 3 runs. Mainly fish picking up the maize and dropping back, i think the fish were really small and could not pick up the lead up. I missed a few runs and hit one fish a carp of 1lbs so not agreat night really. Going to go on saturady so hopefully i will do better then. Not tried photos out due to problems with my computer, defenitly try soon. For now dreaming of a 15lbs + carp.
  24. went fishing last night after work on a canal arm of the main river in sale. Im covered about 3 kms of river walking and looking for carp. I saqw carp taking flies by a bridge area but there was way to much weedand shopping trolleys and other rubbish. I had a fish come right under my feet and start feeding. I found quite a large group xcarp moving through upstream i put worm out on the float i9 had a take straight away i lost this fish trying to hold it off a margin overhanging tree the hook pulled. After ythat the fish went really cagey and they would just pull one worm off and go and then they moved on. The frustration of carp or aware carp.
  25. I've used 50 to 60mm inthe past as hard as rock and still caught tench at night.
