  1. It was on a Matt Hayes programme that he used a feeder with great success on the Monument. It seemed he used it like a lead on a lead clip arrangement with anti tangle tubing behind the tail rubber.

It seemed to work for him Steve but im not sure of the safety aspect of the feeder having to release in case of a line breakage.

He also uses it set up as a heli rig

  2. Shrink tubing over the eye of the hook also aids in protecting the knot from incurring any damage from .

    Really?

Personally i dont buy your viewpoint at all, but each to his own.

I tend to agree with Tony on this one, as the rig will already be in the carps mouth, so how can this contribute to abrasion resulting in hook snap offs? :?

  3. just a case of which way you prefer really, i use the line aligner myself, i've never been happy having my hooklink anywhere near a steaming kettle

    Very true indeed!

One way around this, is to tie up a "Patten or " "Former" rig, heat the shrink the tube under heat, and then with the correct angle place into cold water, then this can be used on a new rig many times

  4. While your both on this thread and seem like great anglers, i have brought up the crimping thread, could you both have a look at my question and see if you can help please,

    Thank you for the complement,

But I am just an average angler too, and I have never used crimps on Mono, and always use a loop to swivel, Ask Tony as I know he uses the 'Chod' regularly, so is more experienced in this area, whereas I am not.

  5. bissami sorry,

Wrong thread  Having said that a running rig fished slack line will be more sensitive without back leads due to the change in angles, and I agree with Josh 100%

    noknot i forgive you!!!!!! :D

I just feel more confident with a light back lead on as you dont tend to get line curls. Just my own personal choice, but like i said i am nothing more than an average angler!!!

    Here Tony OK now?

  6. Hi Welshcarp,

I know its a small lake but is it heavily fished?

Well i wouldnt say really heavily especially for carp anyway as the max at anyone time is 9 ppl on there and they mainly fish for the cattys.

Why do you think that i should not use the chody rig being im new?

Also anyone got any advice on the weight size?

why i was asking is that the lake seems small to hold quality fish like that in and if they are fished for heavily then the choddy is not going to work as it looks unnatural,

If it was me and it was my first trip to this lake then i would go with a in-line setup with a pop up, camo everything up, use light bobbins and slack line with back leads.

Just the way i would fish it, people might have a different opinion buddy

    Good luck,

    Good points,

However it has been stated that its a weedy water so what is the advantage of a backlead,as this could cause more problems? A weed rake would be the way to go for me, and bait up the clear area for a few days then fish it.

  7. Hi Dale,

How about setting up your own heli rig? With two or three different Diameters of tubing? The first a silicone tube that fits onto the lead swivel, then pushed inside that the "heli rig" on a smaller Dia tube with the two beads and ring swivel, and then your anti tangle tube inserted into the heli tube, this way in any event the rig will come apart rendering it safe! Alternatively, why use tubing at all? This is still effective for braid hooklinks, or use a mono or fluro hooklink as the rig was designed for, for long range casting with no tangles, hence the "heli rig" as it will revolve around the main line keeping the rig and bait away from tangles

  8. What I can't understand is that years ago when we made our own rigs from component parts, and not "kits" I think they were well thought out and safe. Also I think that anglers back then regulated themselves and helped each other. There is no excuse today as there is a wealth of knowledge on forums such as this one and in mag's ect today, which was not available 20 years ago, so why do people still use these "death" rigs? Is it that they can't be bothered, or that they just don't care???

People tend to think more about all the gear, than the safety of their quarry, Lets get the fundamentals right!

I would imagine lots and lots of people still used dangerous rigs back in the day. It's just that the internet and things like that wasnt around then so you never heard about it as much. Also back in the day unhooking mats wasnt used so probably alot of people didnt really realise that their rigs was dangerous. Because if they have the brains to rest a fish on solid ground why would they have the brains to use a safe rig? You only have to watch some Kevin Maddocks videos or simular to see what i mean. Also there are alot more rig parts like you say now and alot of people dont know what to do with them.

    Fair comments Paul,

I can only speak for the anglers I fished with at that time, and we were very aware of rig safety 20 years ago! I think the problem is that Carp angling is so accessible today compared to 20 years ago, that some people angle for Carp with little or no experience or understanding how the rigs and lead set ups should work?

By the way I used an unhooking mat 20 years ago

  10. Would you have this rig with a back stop bead ! ie

hooklength then bead swivel with lead running free and back stop bead I have seen this but would that not work like a bolt rig !

So does this mean that you are fishing a running rig on tubing, hence the back stop bead?
